I went upstairs once the women left the mortuary and headed straight for the coffee maker. I sat at the dining room table and fired up my laptop to begin poking around. Jay’s whereabouts were still unknown, and I hadn’t heard from Scotty, either. I hoped to hell they were both okay.

I called the Sacramento Police Department and asked for Lieutenant Dean Lester. “Hold for a moment, please,” the person who answered the phone instructed. After a few seconds, ringing got my attention.

“CSI, Lester speaking.”

“Hey, Dean. It’s Keir Dearly. I called Jay, but he didn’t answer, so I wondered if you could do me a favor. Could you call the prison in Alabama and ask them if Nancy Plum had any visitors before she died? I mean, like for the week before she hung herself?”

“Man, why are you so worried about this?” Dean asked me.

Yeah, I understood why he asked, but I really wished he hadn’t. My answers wouldn’t make any sense, I was sure, but Nancy hadn’t been back for me to try to get anything out of her.

“I guess I’m a little obsessed. I’m trying to figure out why she hung herself after all these years. Does that make sense to you?” I asked, hoping to appeal to his curiosity.

Dean chuckled. “I don’t really care, but as a favor to Jay, I’ll get someone to call and talk to the warden. Thanks again for dinner last night. It was great. You and Dash are okay. I had a good time.”

“Yeah, we enjoyed having you, too. Maybe we can do it again sometime,” I answered.

“That funeral still today?”

I glanced up at the clock to see it was almost eight. I needed to get a move on. I still had to do Nancy’s makeup. “Yes.”

“I’ll ask a couple of sector cars to come by and hang out for a while. I don’t think you’ll have any trouble, but better safe than sorry,” Dean mentioned.

“I’d appreciate that. Thanks a lot,” I answered him before we hung up.

I went down the hall to change into scrubs, happy to see Dash was coming out of the bathroom. “Did I wake you?” I asked.

“You not being there when I wanted to snuggle did. You heading downstairs to finish up?”

“Yeah. I called Dean Lester and asked him to find out if Nancy had a visitor before she killed herself. He’s going to have someone call the prison to ask. There’s… There’s a new victim. She came through this morning with all the women. Her name is Gretchen,” I told him.

Dash stepped out of the closet with a set of scrubs of his own in his hands. “What?”

“Her throat was slit like some of the others, and she said she didn’t know where she’d been killed, but someone over her was screaming for help, and she was missing her left pinky finger. I don’t know what to do, Dash,” I said, feeling more helpless than ever.

Dash walked to the nightstand and picked up his phone, dialing. “Hey, Jonas.
