I hang my uniform in my locker, then yawn and stretch my muscles out. Itâs been a long day, and Iâve still got a long night of surveillance ahead of me to look forward to. Blake jumped at the chance to help me. Apparently, theyâve got her working on crap cases down at the Bureau Field Office, and sheâs dying of boredom.
I grab my bag and shut the locker door to find Boo Radley standing there, his hands in his jeans pockets, leaning against the next locker casually. A small smirk flickers across his lips as he regards me.
âBeen a little more than a week since we last talked,â he starts. âA man might think youâre avoiding him and get his feelings hurt.â
âI never took you as an insecure man.â
He shrugs. âNobody likes to ask a pretty girl on a date and be left twistinâ in the wind.â
âIs that what I am? A pretty girl you asked on a date?â
He chuckles. âYeah, kinda,â he replies. âSo? Youâve had enough time to think it over. I need a decision.â
I nod. âAs much as I appreciate the opportunity, Iâm going to have to pass.â
He stares at me like Iâve just sprouted a second head, and his expression darkens. Heâs surprised and none too pleased.
âCome again?â he asks. âI donât think I heard you right.â
âI think you did.â
Laughing to himself, he turns and leans back against the locker, staring up at the ceiling. I can see him making the quick calculations in his head, trying to determine what this means for him and his team. Finally, he pushes off the locker and turns to me. Radley is making a Herculean effort to keep his temper in check; heâs obviously not accustomed to hearing the word no.
âYou are the first person to ever turn me down,â he tells me. âDo you know what it is youâre passinâ up here, son?â
âI do,â I reply. âAnd like I said, I appreciate the offer. Itâs just not a good fit for me.â
âUh huh,â he says and rubs his jawline, the stubble making a dry, scratchy sound. âAnd what exactly isnât a good fit for you?â
Other than being a corrupt cop? The thought passes through my mind, but I have the good sense to pull it back before it spills out of my mouth. Iâve already pissed him off, and Iâve got no desire to push him any further. Besides, Iâm going to bury him. All I need is the proof.
âI just donât think Iâm Strike Team material,â I offer.
âI say you are,â he snaps. âAnd thatâs all that should matter.â
âAnd yet, it doesnât.â
I turn to him, my own temper starting to flare. Even though heâs a few inches shorter than I am, heâs trying to stand close, trying to loom over me with his presence. As if that will make me back down and give in to him. But I donât scare easy. People who think they can intimidate me into rolling over for them really irritate me.
