Chapter Fourteen

Rosalie, ever the practical one, said, “Will this Sir Malcolm expect to stay here? He and his lackeys?”

“I have no idea,” I told her. “I hope not.”

“I’d better have a couple of rooms prepared, just in case.”

“Maybe they could stay in the old wing,” Adam suggested. “It would suit Sir Malcolm perfectly.”

“He’s a little feudal?” Thorpe asked.

“More than a little. Sorry. I’m uncomfortable, and it’s making me grumpy,” Adam replied.

“Do you feel up to dressing for dinner?” Rosalie asked.

“Yes. Yes. I’ll be fine,” Adam told her, giving her a weak smile.

I hoped he would be. Adam was doing more and resting better than he’d been able to do in London, but his pain and ill temper didn’t seem to be diminishing.

“Thank you for your good advice. I spoke to Rosalie, and we’re in accord. As soon as she can be released, she’ll be coming home,” Thorpe told us, taking his wife’s hand.

“And working just as hard for victory as I have at Bletchley,” Rosalie said to me.

Rosalie and Thorpe left to dress, and we did the same. If anything, the pain lines beginning to etch into Adam’s face made him even more handsome in his evening wear.

I put on my shimmery gray evening gown with a shawl so I wouldn’t freeze in the dining room or anywhere else we might end up after dinner.

Adam went down in the lift with Thorpe and I walked down the stairs with Rosalie. “We rang the dressing gong just as soon as the hunters arrived back, but we won’t have to wait on them hunting tomorrow, thank goodness.”

“How much longer are they going to be hunting?” I asked, hoping they’d leave soon.

“Who knows? The viscount doesn’t tell me anything.”

“But he’s a guest in your home.” The words came out before I could stop them, I was so surprised. Then I realized I shouldn’t have been.

“The viscount makes himself at home wherever.”

“When would you like us to leave?”

“Oh, Livvy. I want you to stay as long as this is doing Adam some good and Thorpe is enjoying having both of you around. You two are no trouble. And,” she added quietly, “I want you to sort out our double murder.”

“Especially Northcott’s?”

Rosalie stopped on the stairs and looked at me.

“I’m still wondering why Valerie Northcott gave you sympathy when her husband was killed. Especially since she seems very friendly with her solicitor. Does she know?”

Rosalie gave me a steely gaze and then whispered, “Later.”

I heard someone nearby and continued down the stairs. “I still think the killer is one of your guests, but I’m no farther forward than I was a day ago. Maybe Sir Malcolm will bring some light to the problem.”

“I hope someone or something does. Thorpe is growing more anxious.”

The dinner gong rang.

“About what specifically?” I asked.

“Me going away from here for days at a time managing our holdings. Silverthorn’s declining health. Two people being murdered in our house while he slept. So, you see, Livvy, you have to solve the murders. Thorpe needs you to.
