Laura was the proud owner of a brand-new WaveRunner, and she’d given me permission to take it out while she was at work. Since the afternoon had turned even steamier than the morning, I decided it was the perfect time for a ride around the lake to think through everything I’d learned so far.

I buckled my life jacket, slid the key fob over my wrist, and went outside. After securing my phone and wallet in the waterproof compartment, I spun the lift’s wheel and eased the watercraft into the channel.

I slipped onto the seat and got the engine to purr without a battle. My grandpa had owned an older model that’d always taken a good deal of coaxing to start. As I idled down the channel, I spotted some turtles sunning themselves on a log, and as I glugged by, they dove for cover.

When I passed the buoy line, I zoomed north. Since it was a weekday afternoon, only a few boats were scattered around. Squeezing the throttle, I giggled as my hair blew back and water misted my face.

I entered Calloway Cove, performed a few three-sixties, and managed to avoid dumping myself into the secluded inlet’s choppy water. The public piers on the Calloway Cove side of Lakeview Park were empty, but trees blocked my view of the swimming area overlooking Smith Bay. I buzzed around the peninsula, where I could see the beach action.

Clover had parked her ice cream truck in the lot. It wouldn’t hurt to stop and ask her a few follow-up questions about the party where she’d theorized Aaron was selling drugs, especially since Lizzie Zook matched Clover’s description. Maybe she had her parties or dates confused, or Sheila was right, and Clover wasn’t reliable.

I zipped back around the peninsula, floated to the public pier, and tied the WaveRunner to a metal post. After retrieving my phone and wallet, I hurried through the trees to the beach. There were no signs of life around the ice cream truck, which seemed weird since there were plenty of kids digging in the sand and splashing in the water. When I drew closer to Clover’s truck, I read a handwritten sign tucked under the windshield wipers.

Be back soon. Clover

I surveyed the cement block building near the parking lot. Maybe she’d gone to the restroom. There wasn’t much else around.

Pushing a stroller, a thin young woman in yoga pants stalked past me, stopped, and turned around. “I wouldn’t wait if I were you.” She scowled. “My kid’s been asking for a fudge bar for an hour.” She pointed at a little boy who looked about three. He grasped a half-eaten animal cracker and smiled at me as if he weren’t too heartbroken over missing out on ice cream.

I glanced back at the truck. Clover would had to have walked or taken a boat to wherever she’d gone, because Hidden Shores was located on the opposite end of the lake. “Did you see Clover leave?”

“Yep. She hopped in a turquoise VW bus—right as we were heading over.
