Chapter Sixteen

“Thanks guys.” Nate waved as the van with all of Warren’s computers pulled away. They’d found five cameras placed around Madison’s property, all of which were set up to monitor her doors and windows. No wonder she felt like she was being watched.

He paused as he rounded her house and caught sight of her rocking on her screened-in porch. She always took his breath away. He hopped onto her deck and stepped through the door. “How about some dinner?”

She stood. “You don’t mind being seen with me?”

He chuckled. “Jeannie’s meeting us.”

Her eyes lost their sparkle. “I think I’ll pass.”

“Come on. Denise can come too.” He took her arm. “Jeannie won’t bite.”

“Famous last words. And Denise took the opportunity to go out tonight, since you were here.”

“Okay, so you can’t stay here alone. We both need to eat and I’m paying.”

“How can a girl refuse?” She climbed into his police-issued Dodge Charger and pulled her safety belt across.

“Here. Let me help you. For some reason, that one doesn’t work right.” He leaned toward her as she leaned toward him. Their heads came so close he could feel the brush of her hair on his cheek. Warmth flooded his body.

“Can you get it?” Her breath tickled his ear.

He clicked her belt into place and straightened, then reached for the ignition. “We’re off.”

“Aren’t you going to buckle yourself in?” She gave him an amused look.

He pulled his own belt across with a loud click and yanked the car into gear.
