Chapter 12

“Cash?” Millie guessed.

“Nope.”

“Drugs?”

“Uh-uh.” Danielle shook her head.

“A body?”

Danielle rolled her eyes. “Then I really would need to talk to Patterson. No. Check it out.” She motioned Millie inside. “There’s a mini camera inside my cabin, hooked to the corner of my television.”

“You put a mini camera in your cabin?”

“I didn’t put a camera in there. Someone else did. You can see it as plain as day.”

Millie reached for the cabin door and Danielle stopped her. “Don’t stare directly at it.”

“Gotcha.” Millie stepped inside, casually glancing around when she caught a glimpse of something round and black perched atop the small corner television.

She returned to the hall and quietly closed the door behind her.

“Did you see it?”

“I saw something, but without crawling on top of the chair and staring at the television, I wasn’t able to get a good look.”

“Who does that?” Danielle asked.

“A killer.”

“A sick, twisted killer who leaves threatening notes. We can still plan a sting, but I think it’s time to give Patterson a heads up.” Danielle involuntarily shivered. “Just thinking about someone spying on me makes me want to throw up.”

“Which is another reason why you need to pack up your things and stay with me until the culprit is caught.” Millie lowered her voice. “What if there’s a voice recording device, too?”

“If there is...” Danielle raised her voice, “I’m coming after you sicko. You aren’t getting away with this.”

Danielle threw the cabin door open and marched inside. She pulled her backpack out of the closet and began shoving clothes into it before moving on to the dresser where she tossed more things inside.

“That should do it. Now all I need is my toothbrush.” She darted into the bathroom while Millie gazed anxiously around the room.

What if there was another camera…one that Danielle missed? She took a tentative step forward and peered at the curtain, giving it a gentle tug.

She moved on to the bunks, careful to stay out of the camera’s line of vision as she casually lifted the mattresses and ran her hand along the edge.

“What are you doing?”

Millie jumped, clutching her chest as she spun around. “You scared me.”

“Sorry. What are you doing?” Danielle repeated.

“Checking for more cameras or recording devices.”

“I already searched the place. It’s clean.” Danielle snapped her fingers. “I’ve got a brilliant idea. Let’s step into the hall.”

She waited until Millie closed the door behind them. “What if we turn the tables by setting up our own surveillance camera and catching them in the act?”

“I like the idea, but where are we gonna find a camera?” Millie asked.

“Annette.”

“Ahh. I hadn’t thought about her. Before we do anything, I want to talk to Patterson to let him know what’s going on.”

The women made their way to the security office. The lights were on. When they stepped inside, they found Oscar instead of Patterson.

“Is Patterson around?” Danielle asked.

“He’s gone for the night. I’m covering the night shift. Is there something I can help you with?”

“As a matter of fact,” Millie said.

“No. We’ll wait and talk to him tomorrow.
