Chapter 9
When Tommy and I returned to the inn, we found Blair and Kat on the porch waiting for us. Blair took one look at the camera in my hands and her eyes shot open. âIs that what I think it is?â
âYeah. We found it thanks to the lycan,â I said, and though it didnât seem possible, Blairâs eyes widened further.
âWhat do you mean? I thought they were nocturnalâ¦â
âApparently not, though it seemed lethargic in the sun. It was kind of hovering over the camera, almost like the device fascinated it or something. It was weird. But what was even weirder was when it heard us and we locked eyes, I went into this sort of trance. I donât really understand it, but it didnât last long because Fang showed up and shot the lycan and it took off.â
âOh, my Goddess! Is it okay?â Kat gasped.
âYou ainât got nothinâ to worry about. Itâs gonna take much more than one of her arrows to bring that thing down, trust me,â Tommy said.
âDo you think the lycan was trying to communicate with you?â Blair asked.
I shrugged. âNo clue, honestly. Anyway, are Thorn and Jimbo back yet?â
âNo. Kat and I had to come back earlier than we wouldâve liked; her ankle was bothering her too much,â Blair said, and Kat sighed.
âI was fine, but Blair insisted I donât do any more damage and dragged me back here.â
âProbably for the best,â I said, though I couldnât help worrying about Thorn. If he and Jimbo ran into the wounded lycan, I couldnât guarantee it would be as non-confrontational with them as it had been with Tommy and me â especially without me there. As strange as it seemed, the creature and I had a connection, though I didnât understand it in the slightest. Why, of all people, would it be me? Sure, my powers to see into the past and future were rare, but telekinetically communicating with a lycan fell well outside of those bounds. âShould we go look for them?â
âDonât worry âbout that, little lady. Iâll track âem down and make sure everythingâs gravy,â Tommy said. âBesides, you gotta see whatâs on there.â
âYeah, assuming we can recover anything,â I said, turning the dead camera around in the light. On the bottom, I spotted a latch that I pushed open with my thumb. A tiny silver sliver sat inside, which I pushed on, activating a spring-loaded mechanism, and popping what looked like an SD card from the camera. Even though it looked undamaged on the outside, that didnât mean the recording wasnât. I turned to Blair. âDo we have anything that can read this?â
âIâm sure Kiki has something in the office,â Blair said and smiled. âItâs times like these I actually appreciate her affinity for collecting random gadgets.â
âGood, then letâs get cracking,â I said and slipped the card into my pocket for safekeeping.
âIâll fetch the other two. See yâall soon,â Tommy said and headed back toward the forest.
âThis way,â I said, and pulled the door open for Blair and Kat.
