The Pletcher home was a lot more ominous in the evening. The sun was just beginning to set, and shadows were thrown across their yard in strange ways, setting me on edge. I wondered if Angel was watching Benji and me make our way up her walkway and to the courtyard gate. Probably. Benji had called her and asked if we could stop by with some huevos rancheros.

Angel had been hesitant but ultimately agreed. Flash wasn’t happy about the leftovers disappearing, but he accepted that it was for the greater good.

“Do you think your mom will come through for us?” Benji asked as we reached the gate.

His question startled me out of my thoughts. It was a good thing too. I’d been imagining Angel with her gun again. It was amazing how I could go my entire life without ever fearing someone, and then suddenly being terrified that if I said the wrong thing or looked at them the wrong way, they’d do something terrible.

“Yeah, of course. She loves meddling.” I raised my hand to knock on the gate, but it swung open before I had the chance. My paranoia hadn’t been completely unfounded. Angel had been watching.

She didn’t say anything at first, only gestured for us to enter, and I hoped we’d made the correct decision by coming there.

“We brought you dinner,” I said, hoping I sounded relaxed and happy to be there, and not like I thought she could have a mental breakdown at any moment.

To my relief, Angel smiled and opened the front door for us. “You have no idea how much I appreciate it. The last couple of days have been a blur, and I haven’t had the chance to think about eating, let alone cooking.” She glanced back to the tray I held. “It smells amazing. I’d forgotten how hungry I was.”

Looked like the old Angel was back.

I followed her inside and set the tray on her kitchen counter. “We’ve already eaten. This is all yours. And I just wanted to let you know how truly sorry I am for yesterday. We should have called before visiting. I’m sure everything with Jake has been so stressful, and we only made it worse.”

Angel was already shaking her head before I finished. “You are not allowed to apologize. I know I acted like I had lost my mind. After Sheriff Potts dropped in unexpectedly and took Jake away, every uninvited visitor became a threat. And to be fair, some of them were. But I should never have pulled that gun out of Jake’s nightstand drawer. He keeps it there for emergencies, and even though he took a gun safety course a few years back, neither of us has touched it since. To be honest, I’m not sure I would even know how to use it if needed. Guess I should have taken the class with him. The safety on the gun was still on, and I don’t know how to take it off.” She winced, as if yesterday’s memory still haunted her.
