One letter just said “I’m sorry” over and over down the page. There was a ballpoint pen on the table, too, she saw. The tooth marks in the cap resembled Jason’s collection. She had no doubt he’d been here and written these letters. But where was he now? She felt a sudden chill and realized the door had blown open. More than that, Sarah Beth, who had been standing beside her, was nowhere to be seen. “Sarah?” she called tentatively. No reply.

She set the letters down and a strong gust from the open door immediately took them, flying them around the cabin like bats. Quinn went to the door and looked outside. The sky had turned dusky purple. They would have to leave soon or it would be dark. “Sarah?” she called again, this time with more urgency. “Sarah Beth!”

She heard a scuffling noise behind her—the papers blowing—and turned around. Sarah Beth stood there with a funny look on her face. “There you are,” Quinn said with naked relief. “Let’s go, huh? This place gives me the total creeps.”

Sarah didn’t reply. She held out her right hand toward Quinn. Though the light grew dimmer, Quinn had no trouble seeing what Sarah pointed in her direction. It was a gun.
