CHAPTER 18

As soon as I took the call everything descended into a confusing blur of chaos and panic.

“What’s going on?” Hudson stood up. “Is everything alright?”

“Sabrina’s shop is on fire. I have to go,” I said, pulling on my shoes and coat quickly. “You stay here and watch Harley.”

“Okay. Call me and let me know what’s happening.”

I nodded and burst out of the door, sprinted downstairs and jumped into the truck. Sabrina’s shop was only around the corner from mine, and two minutes later I turned onto the street and saw the massive blaze spilling out of the three-story building that housed her business.

“Oh my god!” I shouted to myself as I saw how big the fire was. This wasn’t just a small fire; the building was totally going to be ruined after this. There were already two firetrucks on the street outside the shop, along with a crowd of spectators watching from a safe distance. I brought my truck to a screeching halt and jumped out.

“Back, back!” firefighters were shouting as they cordoned off the scene to make sure the onlookers didn’t get hurt. I kept running forward and clashed with one of the firefighters, my eyes on the huge fire illuminating the night. “Ma’am, you have to get back!” he shouted.

“That’s my cousin’s shop! I have to do something!” I said, trying to get around him. Upon reflection there was nothing I could do to help, but adrenaline had me panicking.

“Zora, she’s fine!” someone shouted from within the crowd. Turing around I found Celeste and Zelda waving to me from the back of an ambulance. I ran over to them and saw Sabrina inside the back, two paramedics currently tending to her. Her skin was blackened from smoke, and she was wearing a mask, but she gave me a weak thumbs up as she saw me.

“I’m fine,” she said through her mask. “I’m not so sure the shop will come out of this though.” We were currently about twenty feet down the street from the fire, but it was still very much visible. Fire was oddly hypnotic, and everyone in the area was watching the huge walls of flames dance up towards the night sky.

The firefighters were dousing the uncontrollable flames with several jets of water, though at the moment it didn’t look like the fire was going down at all.

“What happened?” I asked, turning back to look at Sabrina. “How did it start?”

“I have—” She broke into an extended coughing fit before managing to collect herself. “I have no idea. I was upstairs when it started. Everything went up so fast.”

I looked at Celeste and Zelda, and I could tell they were thinking the same thing as me. The message left on the ground outside the statue, the arsonist on the loose. Someone had set fire to Sabrina’s shop.

“Okay, that’s enough chatter,” one of the paramedics said. “She needs to rest now, we’re taking her to the hosp—” Just then a small explosion came from the fire, a shockwave of heat and fire that spread across the street and made everyone take cover.
