Carter is halfway through his lesson about the first war between supes and humans when Layla shuffles in. Her head is down, and she slides into her usual seat, not meeting either of our gazes. He doesnât pause or miss a beat; he keeps on with the lesson as though sheâs been there all along. Iâm thankful he doesnât make a big deal about her arrival, because shame is weighing her shoulders down, and I suspect sheâs beating herself up for what she said to me.
While Iâd like to say I didnât take it personally, Iâm not that person. What she said stung, but she was lashing out. Iâve already forgiven her. I continue writing notes, using it as a distraction from the current reality. Nothing like thousands of deaths and civil unrest to keep you from thinking about how fucked up your life is.
âFor being slower and the weapons available in the early twentieth century, humans still found ways to slay hundreds of shifters in any given battle. Cannons were loaded with silver, which served to take care of the shifters. Fields were filled with explosives, so when the vampires tried to sneak up on a legion, they were blasted apart, giving the humans enough time to burn the head and body in separate places.â
âWhat about the witches?â Layla asks, suddenly perking up.
âThe witches are an interesting set of supes, because theyâve worked hard to stay out of the wars. When shifters and vampires were busy attacking humans across the world and vice versa, the witches were busy fortifying their covens, building their numbers, and growing stronger.â
âDidnât the witches attack shifters and vampires though?â I ask, remembering tiny details from the brief overview our school gave. The main points were to let you know, regardless of how human they looked, supes were dangerous.
âThey did.â He ruffles his hair and yawns. âA few covens of dark witches went on an attack, going after other witches, shifters, vampires, and hunters alike.â
My ears twitch at the word hunter.
Not with the hunters again, seriously, Joan whines in my head.
Shut your trap. Theyâre so interesting.
âThe hunters are gone now. . . right?â
Carter grins. âYouâve been reading?â
Lifting a shoulder, I stare at my nails. âSometimes I study.â
âYouâre right. Hunters are extinct, though not because of the dark witches. A vampire named Nix can be credited with that.â
âShe killed them all? Why?â Layla asks, glancing between the two of us, all of her earlier awkwardness now gone in light of learning more about this world.
âHunters were the strongest of supes, once fully trained, of course, and theyâre driven by a need to kill bad things. So given vampires or even shifters being, well, wild, they would come in and take care of the supes who posed a danger to humans and the other supes. Anyway, long story short, some hunters pissed off Nix, this very old vampire, and she and a few other vampires went and wiped them out.â
âIf they were stronger than them, how did they do that?â I wrinkle my brow.
