Chapter 13
Stevie stared daggers in my direction.
âNice of you to show up.â Stevie stamped her foot as she leaned against the wall across from Room 111. âI was just about to call Detective Winter.â
âNo you werenât,â Thad answered for me. As promised, heâd waited patiently for me to return from my beach adventure so he could let me back into the hotel.
âWhere did the two of you run off to?â Rickiah looked at me and then at Thad. When her gaze fell to his lips, I knew what she was thinking. A sly smile crossed her face. I was too distracted with the conversation Iâd just had with Mrs. Carmichael to blush.
âI saw numbers,â I replied to the group. âI had to leave. Iâm sorry.â
âAnd?â Stevie shrugged. âHave you solved the case? Can we all go home?â
âSpeak for yourself,â Rickiah muttered. âMardi Gras is in full swing in the ballroom, and Iâm not leaving until I get a dadgum slice of king cake.â
âI swear food is all you talk about sometimes.â Stevie directed her negative vibes away from me for once. Apparently, Juniorâs charm had worn off, because she was back to her usual pissed-off self.
âDid you get a key?â I interrupted. Rickiah wasnât like me. She didnât pass up opportunities to argue, and she would have bickered with Stevie all night.
âIt was the charm.â Junior stepped forward with a grin. He handed me a room key, his eyes briefly darting in Thadâs direction.
âYeah.â Rickiah laughed. âHe charmed that lock on the door right open.â
Junior cleared his throat and ignored Rickiahâs comment.
I tried the key, and my stomach churned when it worked. The door to Room 111 creaked open, revealing darkness on the other side. I hesitated, but Stevie walked right past me and flipped on a light. I gulped.
The room had been cleaned. The bed was made but the memory of Georgeâs body haunted the back of my brain. I glanced at the table where Iâd seen a slice of red velvet cheesecake and a cake box with the bakeryâs logo. The table was clear, and the smell of cleaning chemicals still lingered in the air. I rubbed my arms, getting goose bumps. The room was colder than the hallway.
Stevie followed her usual routine when trying to contact the dead. She quietly walked along the perimeter of the room, lightly dragging her fingers on the wall and pausing every so often as if someone was speaking to her. Junior watched her work with great interest while Rickiah observed the room with a disappointed expression. Thadâs shoulder brushed against mine. Iâd hardly moved at all.
âYou would think theyâd splurge for a higher thread count.â Rickiah pursed her lips, rubbing a section of bed sheets in between her fingers. âAnd the towels in the bathroom arenât very soft. I canât believe people spend hundreds of dollars a night for this.â
Stevie cleared her throat, and Rickiah quickly shut her mouth.
Stevie took a deep breath and stopped at a tall mahogany dresser.
âStrange.â Stevie tilted her head, adjusting the bust line of her dress as she touched the shiny wooden surface.
