Chapter Seventeen

“What’s this about a list?” I demanded from Hank after Misty left and I could get myself over to High on the Hoggarty.

“What list?” He put down the glass he was drying.

“You never mentioned you had a girlfriend. With an umlaut.”

“Are you stroking out right now?” he asked. “You’re not making any sense.”

“Your girlfriend, Misty? The one I knew nothing about. She came to me for a reading because she saw my name on a list circled in red. Not to mention the fact that she was worried about you doing something shady. What was she talking about?”

“I thought you kept your clients’ readings confidential,” he said. “Where was all this sharing when I was trying to find out if Emma was seeing anyone?”

“Don’t change the subject,” I huffed. “What in the heck is going on here?”

“Watch your language,” he said. “‘Heck’ is a strong word for this fine establishment. You’ll offend the ladies.”

He motioned to a group of women at the end of the bar who were several glasses into a liquid lunch. They waved at me and burst into giggles.

“Hank.” I banged my fists on the bar.

“Whoa. Why don’t we have a seat and discuss all of this like normal people? It seems like you have a lot on your mind right now.”

He guided me to the same booth that Stormy and I had sat in the day before, and my heart heaved. I had almost forgotten how she stomped out. Almost.

“First things first,” he said. “About Misty. She’s not my girlfriend.”

“She sure talked like she was.”

“Misty would like to be my girlfriend, but that is not my plan,” he said. “We’ve been hooking up for a few months.”

“Hooking up? Gross. Grow up, Hank.”

“You’re hooking up with that hottie I saw you with yesterday.”

“That’s different,” I said. “I didn’t ask her for money.”

“You should ask her for money. You’re so broke you can’t even pay attention.”

“Not now, Hank.”

“Is that what Misty told you? That I asked her for money?”

“Yes.”

“That’s a no-go. She was the one who came up with the hat idea. I told her if she thought it was so great, she could pay for it. And she did. It’s working better than expected. I’ve been handing them out all over town—”

“Why didn’t you pay for those ugly hats yourself? Don’t you have a marketing budget?”

He guffawed. “I wish. All my discretionary funds keep getting eaten up by the mayor’s extensive permit requirements. I wonder who’ll take that over for him. I hear Flynt Burns is interested in running for mayor now. My nightmare—.”

“He’ll have to get in line,” I said.

“What?”

“Nothing. Never mind. Why was my name on a list, circled in red?”

He leaned back. “Now that could be any number of things. Could be a list of people I want to hate but are like sisters to me.”

“Hank.”

“Could be a list of people I’ve asked for help getting my ancestral home back but have refused to intervene.”

“Stop it.”

“But it’s probably a list of locals who owe me money.
