Chapter 12

When we arrived back at the station, I spotted Evie and Carrotway just outside the main doors. Evie saw the Black Beast pull into the lot and waved in our direction. My former partner wore a black tea-dress with small daisies, a pair of black tights, and Doc Martens with yellow laces, and more than one man going by took a long look at her. There had been a time when I’d hoped that Evie would be my Deputy, but Evie had never really recovered from the attack that had left her in the hospital.

“Oh, good,” Duffy said with glee when we stepped from the car. “The rabbit’s here again.”

“I’m not letting that thing inside my office again,” I warned.

“Mike,” Evie called out as she met me and Duffy in the middle of the parking lot. “I hear you’ve narrowed it down, now.”

“You shouldn’t be here for this,” I said.

“I just want to be here in case you need any more information,” Evie replied.

“Fine,” I sighed. “You can stay in my office, but I don’t want you anywhere near the interrogation room. And the rabbit needs to stay in a box or something.”

“Of course,” Evie said with a smile, much too quickly.

I growled, but both women ignored me. Duffy made cooing sounds at the rabbit while Evie let the beastie curl up in her hair. I shook my head and marched towards the doors without checking to see if the women were following me. I walked past the main desk and straight for the lift, and it wasn’t until I was waiting for the doors to open that I realized my partner and my ex-partner were still with me. The lift arrived, and we piled inside, where Duffy started to pet Carrotway’s pelt while Evie held him towards the other woman for easier access. The rabbit, at least, seemed happy.

“Who is it?” Evie finally asked as she let Carrotway return to her shoulder.

“We think it’s Kevin Meyers and Marcus Bay,” I answered as the lift pinged to let me know I had reached the correct floor.

The doors slid open to reveal a cold and uninviting place, a long corridor lined with doors. The walls were sparse and a few tortuous chairs were scattered along the hallway. A coffee machine stood at the far end of the corridor, next to a water cooler that was perpetually empty.

“Together?” Evie asked in surprise. “Like… a team?”

“That’s all we can tell you,” Duffy replied firmly as she stepped out of the lift.

“Come on,” Evie begged. “You can’t say something like that and not tell me more.”

“No,” I snapped. “You know the drill. Now, go up to my office, or I’ll send you home.”

Evie rolled her eyes and sniffed at my order, but she reached forward to press the button, and the metal doors slowly closed between us.

“She’s got a fire inside of her,” Duffy commented.

“That’s what made her such a great cop,” I said. “Not such a great victim though.”

“I guess it never leaves you,” the Deputy spoke in a soft voice.
