CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Steele began to feel dizzy as they reached the precinct. A couple of times between the garage and the precinct, Flynt tried talking to him, but Steele silenced him with a curt shake of the head. Even as they hauled the two members of Canseco’s crew into the building, Steele remained quiet.

He knew he had taken things too far. The sleeper hold would have been sufficient. But something snapped inside of him, perhaps brought on by the mere fact that they were outnumbered or that he had a gun shoved in his face. Add Flynt’s impromptu deal for information and it was all just a straw too many on his camel’s back.

He finally spoke to Flynt when they got inside. Flynt was pushing Buzzcut along while Steele was guiding Under Armour. He spotted Detective White and waved him over. White came rushing through the hall, happy to assist.

“Flynt, can you take your friend to Interrogation Room B. White, this guy goes in A. You mind?”

“Not at all,” White said. He took Steele’s place behind Under Armour and followed Flynt down the hallway.

Steele, meanwhile, hurried to his desk. He was about to pick up his phone to place a call but then saw Kerrie Luna. He hated to get someone else involved, but he trusted her and figured it was the safest route. A bit ashamed of himself, he went to her desk. He saw that she was looking over some sort of financial report.

“Hey, Luna?”

She looked up, a little startled, but smiled at him. “Hey, yourself.”

“Look…can you do me a favor?”

“We aim to serve,” she said mockingly.

“Can you see if you can get a unit or even maybe an ambulance over to Daughtry Pawn Shop? There’s a garage behind the property that may or may not have a slightly beaten man inside.”

She nodded but gave him a concerned look. “Everything okay?”

“Yeah. Flynt and I were on a routine stop, trying to find information on Jake Fallon and things sort of got out of hand.”

“Anything I need to be worried about?” she asked.

“Doubtful.”

“In that case, yes. I’m happy to help. And speaking of which,” she said, tapping her screen, “these are some of Fallon’s financial records. I should have a pretty good summary of it all very soon.”

“You’re amazing, Luna,” he said as he walked away.

“And don’t you forget it, Buster.”

Steele made his way down to the interrogation room. He made it just in time to see Flynt stepping into Room B. Steele went to Room A and found Detective White standing guard at the door while Under Armour sat at the table. He looked up to the two detectives and didn’t look as sure of himself as he did back at the garage.

“Thanks, White,” Steele said.

“No problem.” He then leaned in closer to Steele and said: “Man…what did you do to this guy? He looks scared out of his mind.”

“Just a little skirmish. He made some very bad decisions.”

“Sucks to be him,” White said. With that, he patted Steele on the back and headed back up the hallway.
