TWENTY-FOUR

Forty-five minutes later, we lined up against a wall in the green level corridor. The plan had changed somewhat. Apart from two of the guards, Abaddi’s troops were in conference in the security centre, so we were all ‘busting the armoury together’. As far as I knew, an armoury was a large room in a stately home with medieval armour and swords on display.

There was only a single guard sat outside a caged gate that protected the Mecca we were looking for. We knew where all the players were at that precise moment. Bishop in his bedroom, packing. The harpy outside the panic rooms, pacing. The helicopter pilot was half an hour away. Abaddi was in his security centre, having a big meeting, no doubt about me.

‘Wear the comms, Ana. What if we all have to split up?’ Jake said beside me. ‘You can coordinate with Olivia. She’ll get you off the island. What possible objection–’

‘No.’ The gold gadget was semi-permanent because it stuck in the cartilage like a piercing. It also had GPS in it. Not. Going. To. Happen.

‘It’s sterile. Doesn’t puncture the skin very far, just feels tight. It pinches when it goes into the ear: that’s it. Spider’s got the machine to take it out.’

‘No. We’ve been over this.’

‘Ana? Your choice. Your funeral. Let’s go,’ said Olivia.

Jake walked around the corner. I heard a thump, a groan, then Olivia signalled for us all to follow him. Jake had knocked the sole guard out cold, tied his limbs and placed a slightly S&M-like device over his mouth to gag him when he woke up. He stole the guard’s keys and opened the gate to a narrow enclosed atrium with one metal door leading off it.

Olivia tossed him a square contraption.

Jake pushed it onto the lock of the armoury door and stepped back. The lock blew up with a crack and hiss, making me jump.

‘Stop!’ came a shout from behind us. We all turned around. Four of Abaddi’s guards stood there, machine guns pointed at us. Serious guns – not like the handbag toy variety. Weapons designed to rip twenty holes into you in under a second. We were screwed. It was over before we’d even begun.

Olivia edged towards the door Jake had blown open. Spider ducked low and ran inside. Jake’s body relaxed into his feet apart, no worries amigo, he’s about to decapitate his victim pose. His eyes were bright and his lips twitched upwards. He pointed at the guard on the floor. ‘I’m the Duke of Buckingham. This man attacked us for no reason. I demand an explanation.’ He walked over to the cage as if about to walk through to meet them but locked it from his side.

‘Stop moving,’ a guard said. ‘All guests were required to leave yesterday. You are unauthorised to be here.’ I heard another guard radio our whereabouts. Abaddi would now know where I was, and that I had help. ‘Unlock it. Come out with your hands on your head. And hand over the Sheikha.
