I couldn’t walk fast enough. Even my seasoned New Yorker walk wasn’t fast enough to shake Ezra. I dodged a crowd coming up from the subway, cluttering up the sidewalk as some of them stopped to get their bearings.

“Could you please leave me alone?” I called out without turning around.

“No,” I heard from behind me. “We need to talk.”

I stopped dead in my tracks and spun around, almost causing Ezra to walk right into me.

“What do we need to talk about?” I spat, my hands on my hips and the heat of anger creeping up my neck. “The fact that you talked about me as if I wasn’t even there? Rubbed it in Noah’s face? You’re talking about owning me like I’m a piece of property, but I have news for you. I’m not your property, I’m not your little plaything, and I will not be spoken to or about that way, do you understand me?”

The people around us were giving me dirty looks, and someone even yelled at us to get out of the way. I was suddenly hyper-aware of the fact that we were standing in the middle of the sidewalk and blocking everyone’s path. I couldn’t move now, though. It would soften my words too much. Instead, I simply stood there, shooting daggers at him with my eyes and waiting for a response.

“I understand,” he replied softly.

I blinked a few times as I processed what he’d just said. It could not have been that easy.

Ezra laid his hand gently on my arm and led me off to the side, under the awning of the nearest storefront. Out of the way of the crowds, we were able to focus on each other.

“I don’t own you,” he gently corrected. “You are mine. You belong to me, but you are free to make your own choices. You are still your own person. The only difference is that now, no other vampire can hurt you. Also, now…” He ran his hand down my arm and tangled his fingers with mine. I felt a chill and a rush through my body, and suddenly all I wanted was him.

“Now, you will crave me as much as I crave you,” he finished, his green eyes dancing with lust.

I already craved you, I thought to myself as I let myself get lost in his eyes. He leaned in and kissed me, softly at first, and then a bit more forceful. My legs went weak, and my mind went blank, giving in to the sensations coursing through my body, so when he broke off the kiss, I was left feeling empty in its wake.

“I’m going to walk you home,” he informed me, leaving no room to argue with him. I simply nodded and let him fall into step beside me. We walked the rest of the way to my dorm in silence, but every inch of my body was alive with heightened awareness as he walked just a little closer to me than necessary.

I wondered briefly if Sasha would be home and was grateful to find our space empty.
