Chapter Nineteen
I was looking forward to seeing the arena and what Star had put together for the quilt judging. I had full confidence in her. The issue was Star didnât have very much confidence in herself.
The sun beat down on my head, my sewing basket was heavy on my arm, and I regretted the hot coffee that was burning the inside of my palm. I stepped inside and squinted in the dim lighting. The sound of oinking and snorting echoed off the metal walls and ceiling.
In the middle of the arena, a line of enormous pigs were walking in a circle around the show-ring. Their teenaged handlers jogged before them. By the look of it, it was a group of sows, and the smallest one could not have been under a hundred and fifty pounds. The largest one had to be close to two hundred. Seeing the sows prance around the ring, Jethro came to mind. The little pig was no bigger than a toaster. What would he have thought of these giant sows?
As if Iâd beckoned him, I heard someone crow, âJethro, look at all the pretty ladies in the ring!â
I turned around to see Juliet Brook walking into the area in a bright orange and yellow polka-dotted sundress and strappy high-heeled sandals, which were just about the worst footwear she could have chosen for the fair. The chance of stepping into something unsavory on the grounds was about eighty percent if not ninety. I tried not to think what might be on the bottom of my black sneakers.
Reverend Brook followed a few steps behind his wife. He was a plain and mild-mannered man with glasses, and I had never seen him in anything but a buttoned-up long-sleeve dress shirt and dark slacks. One time, I happened to be driving my buggy by the church on the way to the Sunbeam Café, and he had been trimming the churchâs hedges in the same outfit.
âOh, Millie.â Juliet waved the arm that wasnât wrapped around Jethroâs torso. âIâm so glad to see you here.â
I walked over to them. âI didnât know you were coming to the fair today. You didnât mention it yesterday.â
She placed a hand on her cheek. âI know. That was awful of me. My only excuse is that when we last spoke, I didnât know I was coming. However when the reverend said he had some free time to spend with Jethro and me this morning and I checked the schedule and saw the pig judging was going on, I knew this was the perfect family outing. Jethro is just thrilled.â
I glanced down at Jethro, and his eyes just about bugged out of his head as he stared at the giant hogs in the ring. It was quite clear to me that he had never seen a pig quite as big as those sows.
âJethro, are you ready to meet some of the ladies? Maybe we can get you married just like Aiden!â She nuzzled her face into the top of his head.
