CHAPTER 11 (CHRIS)
Hunting with Gavin wasn’t something Chris necessarily wanted. But he was one of the few in the pack that didn’t mind ignoring Ethan. Gavin played by his own rules, which he made up as he went along. Watching him irritate the members of his pack in the manner that he did was entertaining, but it made her realize he barely operated in the realm of sanity. As she hunted with him, she realized that her ego had gotten her into a bad situation.
They had been out searching for a creature for nearly four hours. The search areas were divided, concentrating on areas where the creatures had attacked or been spotted. Chris followed close behind as Gavin darted through the woods, assessing the area as though he had truly given in to the panther and its primal ways.
Now they traipsed through the bosky area near Thaddeus’s home, where she and Ethan had been attacked. The deeper they trailed into the woods, the less visible they were but the harder it was to negotiate the uneven, crowded area. The fallen autumn leaves crunched under their feet along with numerous broken branches.
Somehow, Gabriella and Gavin had slipped away from her. It was the animalistic sounds of the brawl that identified their location. Gabriella fought the creature, moving fast around it as she engaged it, but had difficulty subduing it without spilling blood. This is one hell of a task, Chris thought angrily.
Gavin had shifted to his panther and stalked toward the creature. It changed to mimic his appearance but stood upright in a peculiar duplication. As Gabriella continued to try to wrangle it to the ground, Chris slipped in closer, Tasering its leg then chest. Instead of disabling the creature, it just enraged it. Hoisting Gabriella by the throat, it tossed her several yards across the meadow. Her arm angled in an odd position behind her, possibly broken. When Gavin charged toward the distorted thing, it pushed him out of its way and aimed for Chris.
Drawing her weapon, she hoped that the tranquilizer gun would work the way she intended. But as the creature shifted, changing its appearance again, her finger froze on the trigger. It looked human—a very familiar human. Of all its morphing, which had barely resembled the type of creature hunting it, this one had the most intricate and precise face yet. Staring back at her were refined, classic Mediterranean features that belonged in a museum on a sculpture. Penetrating hazel eyes stared back at her. She knew that face, those eyes, and those features all too well—Ryan. Chris gasped at the image in front of her, barely managing to point the gun in the creature’s face, but she couldn’t pull the trigger.
The moment of distraction was all it needed. Snatching the gun from her, it tossed it out of reach. She moved back just in time to dodge the fist swinging in her direction. Using the arm as leverage, a hip toss landed the creature on its back.
