Cecilie was perched on the edge of her desk surveying the office. It was a quarter past eleven and Karstensen had called a meeting ahead of his press conference. After three days of investigation, everyone in the Division looked done in, except Karstensen who was radiant. It was as if the sensational nature of the case and his daily contact with the press had cheered him up. Every day had brought a new press briefing with Karstensen in fine fettle and his shirt unbuttoned some way.

Despite the fact that the marks on Cecilie’s neck had almost disappeared and her two broken fingers were on the mend, the encounter with Morten was still deeply embedded in her mind. Not like the rape, which had tormented her for decades. No, this dominated her mind in a different way. The last few days’ investigation of Morten’s violent past had brought about a sense of victory. A feeling that made adrenaline course through her and gave her self-confidence she didn’t remember having experienced before. It was also something that had helped her through the interviews with Morten’s parents. Both of them had seemed shocked by the discovery in their freezer. They were most definitely unaware of their son’s crimes. Following Karstensen’s orders, Cecilie and Lasse had gone to the incineration plant to speak to a couple of Morten’s former colleagues. None of them had had a single good word to say about him, but they also hadn’t seen him behaving in any way suspiciously. Cecilie had stopped by the area where the waste plant had its grinders and noted how easy it would have been for Morten to dispose of bodies there.

“Cecilie? Cecilie?”

She looked towards Karstensen, who was standing with his arms slack at his sides. “I beg your pardon?”

“The Nomads? The bikers? How far have we got looking into them?”

She blinked. “We’re forming an overview of the club’s members, and especially its hangers-on. We’re doing this in partnership with Section Two, which has run several operations against the Nomads. We’ve also got NC3 looking into who Morten was in contact with digitally, and where he was before the killing.”

“But …” Lasse began.

“But what?” Karstensen asked, looking at him.

“If it’s biker-related, then we’re looking for a bandit with very small feet. Forensics took casts of the footprints at the scene and have concluded that Morten’s killer was wearing size fives.”

There was scattered laughter around the room, which didn’t seem to please Karstensen. He shifted his gaze to Cecilie to indicate that he wanted an answer. She smiled slightly. “We’re also working in parallel on a slightly different theory.”

“Which is?” he said impatiently, checking his watch.

“That Morten was killed by one of his victims.”

Karstensen raised his eyebrows. “The press will bloody love that. Does it hold water?”

“When we searched the parental home, we found various drawings and texts prepared by Morten that might explain his motives,” Cecilie said.

“Quite the Picasso,” Lasse interjected, holding up a folder of Morten’s illustrations. The drawings were childish, mostly focusing on the blood spurting from severed limbs.
