Chapter 25

Terry New was not pleased to see Kath and Tasha at his door again. Kath wasn’t surprised at New’s resentment either. He stood at the door of his house in his overalls staring down at them. “I’m just about to get off to another job,” he said. “I’m very grateful for all you did finding Jayden and everything but this is getting a bit much now, don’t you think?”

“We just want a quick word, that’s all, Terry,” Kath said

“And what might that be? I feel like a criminal,” New said, glowering at her.

Kath held up the picture of the copper ring. “I wondered if you could shed any more light on this?”

New stared at the image. “I told you, Jayden must have found it somewhere. Maybe when he was down in the shelter. I dunno.”

“Come on, Terry, Jayden told me he got the ring from his grandfather, your dad. He said Dave was in a band called Arthur and the Galahads. Now, the lead singer of that band went missing in 1964. Sixty years later, we find a body with that ring on. How do you account for that?”

“Nah,” Terry said, distantly, his eyes still fixed on the picture of the ring. “You aren’t gonna do that.”

“Do what?”

“Blame my dad for this singer’s death. He might have been in that band but he never hurt anyone in his whole life.”

“We aren’t trying to pin anything on anyone, Terry,” Kath said. “We’re just trying to find out the truth of what happened to this young man.”

“Okay” New said, “My dad did have an AG ring but he never wore it. Not when I was a kid. Jayden found it when he was rummaging around in my dad’s stuff. After he’d died. I didn’t know what it was, so I let him keep it. That’s all I know.” He sounded calmer now but Kath had detected a quaver in his voice that suggested he was still holding something back.

“Your wife said something about Father Lanigan bringing your dad peace of mind before he passed away,” Kath said. “Can you tell me what troubled him?”

“How would I know?” New snapped. “Probably the nonsense that stupid priest was feeding him about hellfire and damnation. Dad never really talked to me about stuff like that. Are you finished? Only I have to go to work.”

“Of course, Terry,” Kath said, “but there’s somebody’s son lying in our mortuary and he’s been under the hill, lost to his family for sixty years. Just think about what you’ve been through with Jayden this last week. You’d want to bring him home, wouldn’t you? If you do know anything about this, please tell us. Think about it.”

Terry New hesitated, looking from the picture to Kath and Tasha. “I’m sorry. I can’t help you,” he said quietly and pushed past them.

If he was being completely honest with himself, Blake had agreed to handle the media side of things just so that he had an excuse to talk to Hannah again.
