Chapter 24
Michael knocked on Julie’s door at 4 pm. Julie appeared in shorts and a tank top. Michael smiled at her.
“You look great.” He beamed.
“Thanks.” She glanced at him. He was wearing shorts and a T-shirt. She noticed his biceps. “So do you.”
“I’ve got the Beemer all warmed up and ready for us.”
“So, where are we going?” She asked as he opened the door for her.
“You’ll see.” He smiled.
The two drove to the west side of town. Michael stopped at an old railroad train station. It was in severe disrepair, with cracking brick façade and a non-existent roof. The entire site was fenced in with no-trespassing signs placed at different intervals. The fence was to keep looters and graffiti painters away.
“What is this place?”
“This is the old railroad train station. We’re just in the initial steps of restoring it. But somehow we lost the funding.” He glanced at the building.
“It needs a lot of work. And, that takes money.” She looked over the station. “Is this some of the money that was embezzled?”
“I’m not sure. But, we’re not here to talk about the case. We’re here to see the town.” He exhaled loudly. “I just wish I could do more to help this project along.”
“Maybe we can do a fundraiser?” Julie hoped to brighten his mood.
Michael turned to her. “You have ideas?”
“Yes.” Julie nodded. “I would like to help.”
“I was hoping you would say that.” His face brightened. “Come on. There’s more to see.”
The next stop was about a mile west. The Silver Creek Park was a welcome site compared to the old train station. The park had ample facilities for picnics, jogging, walking, along with basketball courts, tennis courts, racquetball courts, a baseball field, and a large playground area.
“This is really nice. I didn’t find this in my exploring.”
“I thought you might like it. My family and I came here a lot when I was a kid. My dad was into softball and we had neighborhood games. It was great.” He surveyed the area. “There’s a hiking trail just over there.” He pointed.
The pair headed to the trail. It was wide, easily accommodating two pairs of hikers. It was paved with loose gravel with signs clearly marking the trail.
Michael nudged Julie’s arm. “Race you to the top.” He took off running up the trail.
“Michael!” She shouted as she ran to catch up with him.
At one point Julie was able to overtake Michael, but it didn’t last long. He was clearly the faster runner, but she was not about to give up. She pumped her legs harder until she was even with him. He grinned at her as they reached the top together. Both fell down breathing hard.
He turned over to look at her. “You’re a pretty good runner. Even though I went easy on you.”
“What? Easy on me? I was the one who was easy on you. You had a head start.”
They both laughed. Soon, they were looking over the vast Eagle Mountain and the view was breathtaking. The mountain’s elevation had to be close to 7,000 feet.
