Chapter Twenty-One

Calin

“This is ridiculous. They’ve been gone for four days. Why aren’t the wolves out there looking for them? God knows what could have happened to them.”

Oliver is pacing up and down the dining room, the same way he did yesterday and the day before that, the only difference today being how fast his strides are and how much swearing he's doing.

“This is fucking ridiculous. You know that, right? There are people after her, vampires who want her dead.”

“I'm well aware of that. As is everybody in this house.”

The sound of his teeth grinding together reverberates through his skull, and I can hear it from where I’m sitting all the way over on the other side of the room. Earlier today, he was out berating the wolves. Asking why they weren’t doing anything. I know he’s worried, but that was taking things a step too far. It’s not as if they don’t have enough to worry about. Hence, I ventured out into the daylight to drag him back inside. We’ve been going around and around the same point for the last half an hour, and it doesn’t show any sign of abating.

“Try and take a bit of comfort from the fact that they're still here. I assume, if the worst-case scenario had happened, they would be able to sense it.”

“Worst case scenario? You mean, as in they're dead? You know there are a hundred possibilities before it reaches that stage, all of which involve unthinkable pain and torture. Not to mention the fact that Naz isn’t even part of the pack, so how would they be able to sense her? I just don’t know why she had to run off like that. Why couldn’t she at least have told someone where they were going?”

I watch the pain twist on his face, knowing that what he’s saying is a lie. And knowing that he knows it, too. Vampire hearing can have its advantages, but that wasn’t the case four days ago, when I would have preferred not to have it.

I should have seen it coming, though. I’ve not been oblivious to the way Oliver’s heartbeat rises every time Narissa approaches. Nor how he would engineer things to ensure that she was never left alone with me. Not that she would have allowed anything to happen. No, I made my bed. Now I’m having to lie in it. Which, I guess, is why I feel just the tiniest bit of sympathy for him. He messed things up between them himself, but that doesn’t mean he’s not hurting.

“You’re not to blame for her disappearing, you know," I say, as gently as I can.

Apparently not gently enough. He snaps his head around to face me, eyes narrowed, lips curled in a snarl.

“I bet you're just loving this, aren't you? I bet you're getting your kicks seeing how much I’ve screwed things up.”

“No,” I tell him truthfully. “My concern is for Narissa. For her happiness. That’s all that matters to me.”

He snorts, derisively, but there’s less venom in the sound.
