Chapter Seventeen

“We should go through town and we ought to go in two groups.” Ilys stated matter-of-factly, coming back to the huddled friends and speaking with the same blatant self-assurance she had displayed when she first appeared to them. She did begrudgingly admit that she had never shielded so many and could not guarantee they would pass entirely undetected, but she suggested taking Gairynzvl and Ayla first, along with whichever Guard they chose who would see to their protection. She would leave them at the entrance of the Braying Caverns and then return for the others.

“Is that really what you call it?” Nayina cried, fully aware of the use of the terrible place, but unable to remain silent any longer as the heaviness of despair and the weight of the gloom around them pressed down on her.

Gairynzvl nodded and answered in a soft tone, “what happens within its walls is even more dreadful than the name suggests. You should prepare yourself for what you will see and hear.”

Comprehending his warning she stood for a long moment and stared at him uncertainly. Softly she muttered an apology. “Sorry, I was not thinking.” He nodded with understanding, but Ilys hissed under her breath and turned away.

“Well think next time. There are Legionnaires everywhere and we cannot have you losing control here.”

No one opposed her outburst. Stifling her emotion, Nayina shook her head. “It is I who am sorry. I hoped I would be able to be of some assistance, to help with the little ones, but the thought of what happens to those poor childfey is too much. I cannot bear it. I should go back and wait for your return with Veryth.” Her pronouncement surprised them, but Reydan stepped closer and drew her to him in a warming embrace, whispering his agreement with her decision and assuring her of his return. Ayla and Mardan moved nearer as well, sharing supportive words and hugs before Nayina turned back to the portal, but their display of patience and acceptance made Ilys roll her eyes. Turning to gaze in the direction of the encampment, she moved closer to Gairynzvl and reminded him to close the portal before they set off.

After he had done so, he took Ayla by the hand and drew
