CHAPTER THIRTEEN

(From Helena’s Point of View)

I would almost rather tear my eyes out of their sockets than touch Levi one more time this evening. It’s taking a great deal of willpower on my part not to rip his hands from their wrists so he can’t run his fingers across my skin again. He seems to be taking a great deal of pleasure from torturing me with his touch. The sad thing is that I only have myself to blame. I’m the one who asked him to play up our newly-wedded bliss while we are at Anna’s party.

My purpose is two-fold. Firstly, I want the people attending this little soiree of Anna’s to believe Zuri Solarin is madly in love with his newly-wedded wife. As long as Levi does what I tell him to, I might even let him remain in the body he’s chosen for a little while. Secondly, I want to torture that doe-eyed War Angel who keeps watching my every move. He’s an irritating distraction that I don’t need right now. I have too many plans set into motion. I can’t have him dividing my attention when I’m so close to having what I want.

As I watch Malcolm effortlessly twirl Anna around the dance floor, I can’t help but notice how she looks at him so adoringly. It’s like he alone brings light into her life, and nothing will ever diminish the way she sees him. How my sister can let a man control her emotions so completely is beyond my comprehension. I would never let a man have that much power over me. Never.

“Do you have a minute?”

I tilt my head to the right and take a deep breath before expelling it in a huff of aggravation. I contemplate what effect ignoring Cade’s presence would have, and quickly conclude that he won’t budge until I at least acknowledge his existence. Begrudgingly, I look to my left and see him standing there, a pleading look in his eyes.

“What do you want?” I ask irritably, eyeing him up and down. I can’t deny that he’s attractive. I would have to be blind and stupid not to notice that he’s physically perfect, and his blue eyes are so clear I can see straight into the deepest recesses of his soul. Ugh, how can someone be so…good?

“Can we talk,” he whispers to me, “in private?”

“What for?” I ask curtly.

“Please, Helena. I just want to talk.”

“And if I talk to you, do you promise to leave me alone forever?”

“If that’s what you truly want afterwards, I will.”

“Fine. Where do you want to have this little heart-to-heart of ours?”

“The terrace is empty.”

I make my way through the crowd, with Romeo following close behind me. Once I’m outside, I take a deep breath to clear my head. I have to admit, my sister’s city is beautiful, in a human sort of way. I can well imagine her growing up in a place where there was always light of some kind. I, on the other hand, was raised in a place where neither the sun nor the moon was able to reach.
