The lion was already making roughly towards the Castle. It was far off, still, on the northern shore of the lake, where the trees were yellowing and papery leaves falling down. Now it hesitated in its advance, vaguely conscious of a fresh motivation. It did not foresee the Castle. The promise of food had started it moving, the idea of appeased hunger, for the woods were empty of things it could kill, except for the littlest beasts and the tiniest birds. As for the doors of the Castle, it would merely throw its strong body against them when it met them. The motivation would see to that. And the doors would yield to the lion, even the door of the keep, even the porter’s door, which the hags had generally given over barring. They reckoned Lir shortly to be dealt with, and disliked maneuvering the bars with their stiff fingers as they went in and out to collect herbs and weeds for their potions.

But the lion did not guess its luck. It was only lured, though not by scent or instinct, towards a location where it might feed.

And the lion ran on eagerly through the starry night.
