Chapter Seventeen

Wolf left the ballroom as soon as he finished the dance with Lady Amelia. He needed to be alone, to think. The sounds of a glass clinking inside his study could be heard even from outside the room. Slowly, he opened the door and found it occupied by Lara.

What was she doing here? He had gotten away from the ball wanting to be away from her. When Anne had asked him to dance with her, he had been sorely tempted to have her in his arms. So much so that he nearly reached for her on the spot. Flustered, he had realized his folly and said the first thing that had come to his mind.

Worse, he had then asked Amelia Pemberley for a dance. His mother had been throwing her name to him so often, and he’d needed the distraction badly, so he decided to see if the girl would suit him. But he had regretted every moment of that dance. Lady Amelia had spent the entire waltz flirting with him, batting her eyes at him, and trying to be as physically close to him as was possible in a waltz. Thoroughly disgusted, he had left her as soon as the dance was over, wanting to get away from the ball.

But now here Lara was in his lair, freely partaking his whiskey and from the looks of it getting foxed. She faltered when she saw him, her hand rushing to her chest. Her bosom heaved and fell with every breath she took, and heat rushed to his loins. He groaned, forcing himself to ignore his body’s reaction to her.

“I don’t recall giving you freedom to use my study,” he grumbled.

When she only stared at him, he continued in the same haughty tone, “And I definitely don’t recall giving you permission to partake in my expensive whiskey.”

He barely had time to duck when the crystal glass she was holding smashed into the wall behind him.

“Lara, what the—”

A second glass smashed on his left, barely missing his shoulder.

“How dare you?” she yelled. She looked around, presumably for another glass to throw at him, but there was none. And then her eyes glimmered as they fell on the heavy crystal decanter. “Expensive whiskey, was it?” Smiling, she lifted it.

Understanding her intention, Wolf caught her arm and swiped the decanter from her raised hand and placed it on top of a glass cabinet nearby, safely out of her reach.

She glared at him. “If you ever insult me again in public like that, I will injure your man parts,” Lara declared. “And do not ever use your money to throw men at me again.”

His lips twitched. She was adorable when she was feisty like this.

“Do not look at me amused. I hate you,” she insisted when he stayed silent. Her eyes glittered, and then she swayed, spoiling the entire effect. He smiled as he steadied her, holding her elbows.

“Because of you, he…he…” Lara blinked. “Finally,” she said, delicately outlining his lips with her fingers. His entire body stilled and then hardened.
