CHAPTER FOURTEEN

The closer they got to the police department, the more certain Rylie was.

As much as she didn’t want it to, it all made sense. It was the reason Bobby Boucher had been pointing blame away from anyone in Henry. The reason she’d been so intent on following them everywhere and helping them every step of the way. The reason she’d insisted that everyone in Henry was good, incapable of such a crime.

It was because she was protecting one of their own.

When she explained this to Michael, he shook his head slowly. “Oh, hell.”

She understood. Part of the reason why they succeeded in these cases was by building rapport with the local police departments. And if the agents went in accusing one of them? That was the equivalent of the first shot in a war. If they did that—and if they were wrong—they could probably expect no more help from the local authorities ever again.

“I hope you know what you’re doing.”

She gnawed on her lip as she stared out the window. “I do.”

“For sure?”

“No. But I’m going with my gut.”

“Is that what the dream told you?” he asked as he navigated onto the main street toward the police headquarters.

She nodded. “It just makes sense. There was nothing wrong with these women’s cars, right? So, they had to pull over for another reason. And what better reason then . . .”

“A police officer, demanding that they pull over,” he finished. “Yeah. All right. It makes sense. But that was in your dream?”

“Yep.”

“Weird dream.”

She suppressed a shudder at the memory of Franklin’s black smile. “You don’t have to tell me that. I mean, I’ve read his reports backwards and forwards. Franklin worked odd jobs, was into dealing drugs and a slew of other illegal things, and hung out with bad people. He wasn’t and never did impersonate a police officer, as far as I know.”

When they reached the lot in front of the small ranch, Rylie stepped out, eager to test her theory, but Michael hung back. “Come on,” she told him.

“Coming,” he answered, though he was still in the driver’s seat, taking his time.

She put her hands on her hips. “Are you dragging your feet?”

“Obviously.” The dimples appeared.

“Oh, don’t be a baby. You’re too worried about offending someone. But I’m more concerned about catching this guy and making sure that no one else dies.”

His face fell. “I’m concerned about that too. But if we’re going to go in there and accuse someone, I hope we’ll do it with a little tact.”

Her mouth opened. “What are you saying? That I have no tact?”

He shrugged. “Well. . . .” He gave her an If the shoe fits raise of the eyebrows.

Yes, that was exactly what he was saying. “I’m going to try to forget you said—or implied—that.”

“It’s not that you have no tact. It’s just that when you want to solve a case, you go in, guns blazing. And sometimes innocent bystanders wind up getting caught in the crossfire. These people are supposed to be assisting us.
