They were delighted with their son. He was named Robert Sheridan Lowell and called Sheridan, after Caroline’s brother and her favorite ancestor, the playwright and satirist, the wit, the drinker, the carrier of genius and—possibly—the gene for alcoholism. Lowell, fifty-four when Sheridan was born, was well pleased. Sheridan looked uncannily like his father and would bear that resemblance throughout his childhood. Lowell described his new son to Harriet in a letter—he was trying hard to maintain an affectionate, long-distance relationship with his daughter—as looking like a “lobster-red stiff gingersnap man” or a bartender who “imbibes as well as sells.”65 He would incorporate that description into a commemorative poem, “Robert Sheridan Lowell,” published in The Dolphin:

… too much blood is seeping …

after twelve hours of labor to come out right,

in less than thirty seconds swimming the blood-flood:

Little Gingersnap Man, homoform,

Flat and sore and alcoholic red …
