Compassionate Mary

The Catholic hibakusha also refer to more personal dimensions of Mary. People readily relate to Mother Mary, an image especially poignant for those who lost mothers. Nakamura Kazutoshi connects Mary’s presence to his memory of his own mother, lost to the atomic bomb. Like Ozaki, he never found his mother’s body. She was on her way home, between houses when the bomb dropped and Nakamura states, ‘I searched together with my father for about three days, not knowing where she was, but we couldn’t find her.’ One of ten children, Nakamura tells me he is the only surviving child to this day. His mother, he says, was ‘not very strong’, but provided well for their large family:

She raised so many children that […] at the time, you [only] got a certain amount each, […] a ration of just a little rice […] there was not enough for everyone [and therefore, my mother missed out] […] She would go so far[…] to the country, even though she would get only a little [food] […] So, death […] was experienced [by her] as blessing, although […] it was sad, but Mary called her, don’t you think? I do anyway […] On the other hand, maybe my mother is like Mary and just went up to heaven directly.50
