Chapter 12

He came back and thrust a glass into Susan’s hand. “I wish I knew just what he must have said to Rose. I wish the elevator man had heard even a few words. Whatever he said, it looks as if he induced Rose to go to the house and came to take her there. Well, here’s to—no, not crime—to us.”

She settled back in her chair. “Greg, did that apartment seem to you—horrible?”

‘You should have seen the kitchen. It would have put you off your food for a month. Rose was not a housekeeper.”

“It gave me the creeps.”

“It gave me the creeps, too. Always did. I don’t see how G.M. stood it even as little as he did.”

“It would have been so easy for Rose to be the kind of wife G.M. needs.”

Greg considered it, moved an ashtray, and shook his head. “Nope. She had no will power. Not much in the way of brains either. She just drifted any easy way.”

“The apartment must have been beautiful once.”

“I didn’t see it when he first bought it. Only after Rose had had her way with it, Rose and Milly.”

“Do you suppose we’d get anywhere if we could get pictures of everybody close to Rose—or to G.M.—and show them to the doorman and the elevator man?”

“If Rose was killed because she was Rose, I mean, if she was the target—as she certainly was in a literal sense—then it would be reasonably simple, I should think, to get pictures of everyone who was close to her. There’s got to be a certain intimacy between the murderer and the murdered person. That is, as a rule. I can’t imagine Rose having the strength of mind to make an enemy of anybody. Yet she did have money and her relatives do inherit.”

“Especially Milly.”

“Especially Milly. Even the stuffy Ligon might have some need for money. I think Lattrice will investigate that possibility. A busy little man is Lattrice. Rose was killed Friday afternoon late. This is Sunday. He’s already gotten G.M.’s key and called at G.M.’s apartment and asked questions. I imagine he has also tried to establish for certain the alibi that Dora claims—-Dora and her Bert. Of course, in my opinion Bertie would say anything Dora told him to say. She’s a powerful woman. But I may be doing him an injustice.”

“He doesn’t look very happy.”

“Who would in that atmosphere? I think they could get photographs easily enough of people close to Rose. Apparently she never went out, she just holed up in that ghastly place. Seems too bad, as you say. But if G.M. was the target, the field is wide. Hard to find out what enemies he may have made. He may not know himself. Impossible to get pictures of everybody he has ever known. But I think that the man who phoned Rose that afternoon called on Rose. Then he went down to the street, avoiding being seen in her company, slipped around the corner and waited for her in a car.
