JUNE 30

Our mouths were filled with laughter.

—PSALM 126:2

I was tired. It was the end of a long school day at the end of June, and teaching was getting me down. The kids were eager to begin summer vacation, and while I understood, it was my job to settle them down. I assigned a composition. The topic, I announced, drawing one from thin air, was “My Pet Peeve.” Frankly, any topic would have done. I was merely trying to gain a little peace and quiet. “My pet peeve,” I commented in a serious tone, “is students who don’t take their work seriously.” I looked pointedly at Cliff, the class “wise guy.” Oh, he was genuinely funny and not malicious, but I felt that the classroom was not the place for any hijinks or jokes. “Remember, report card time is coming... blah...blah...blah....” I droned on, boring even myself.

Of course, that night I had to pay for it by marking thirty-five papers. I groaned, even more so when I discovered Cliff’s essay on top. My forehead creased as I read his first line. Then I burst out laughing. “My pet, Peeve,” he had written, “is a good pet. He has to be fed and watered three times a day. He likes to be walked at a brisk pace....”

Laughing, I shoved the remainder of the papers back into my briefcase and the next day announced, “As a ‘Here Comes Summer’ gift, everyone gets an A on that paper!” Then I silently thanked Cliff for teaching me an important lesson: lighten up!

God, help me to stop taking my life—and myself—oh-so-seriously all the time! And if there are people in my life with a sense of humor, may I learn from them!
