Chapter Nineteen

Much to Slater’s surprise, Adrian Davies arrived, as arranged, at 10.30 a.m.

‘Ah, Mr Davies, come on in,’ said Norman. He led Davies towards their small informal seating area and invited him to sit down. Slater joined them just a moment later.

‘You’ll be pleased to know we’re making progress in locating your sister,’ began Norman.

‘Really? Oh, that is good news. Have you actually found her?’

‘Not yet, but we think we’re on the right trail. We might even have found where she was living, but before we get to that, we’re hoping you might be able to provide us with a bit more information.’

‘I’ll certainly try,’ said Davies.

Norman handed the photograph of the dead girl to Davies. ‘Can you confirm this isn’t Martha?’

Davies studied the photo and began to turn a little pale. ‘I don’t understand. Is this woman dead?’ he asked.

‘I’m afraid she is,’ said Norman. ‘You see, we had to explore the possibility Martha might be dead. Now we’re pretty sure this isn’t Martha, but she does fit the description, so we need you to confirm it’s not her.’

Davies handed the photo back to Norman as if it was a hot potato. ‘No. That’s definitely not her.’

‘Okay, thank you,’ said Norman. ‘Now I want you to take a look at this photograph.’

He handed the photograph of the two women to Davies. ‘We found this photograph. We’re hoping you can identify these two women.’

Davies studied the photograph. ‘Where did you get this?’

‘We found it in a flat in Tinton. We believe one, or both, of the women in that photograph were living in the flat.’

‘Did you find Martha’s belongings? Her laptop?’

‘I’m afraid the flat was empty and we didn’t find anything like that, but can we get back to the photograph?’

Davies looked at the photo again. ‘The one on the left is Martha, but I have no idea who the other one is.’ He looked a bit closer. ‘Hang on, the other one looks a bit like the dead girl you just showed me. Is it her?’

‘Yes, it is,’ said Norman. ‘But this photo was taken before she got hit by a truck, so her face is a little different. You’re quite sure that’s Martha on the left?’

‘Definitely. I’d know my sister anywhere.’

‘Really?’ said Slater. ‘And you’re quite sure this is your sister?’

‘What?’ Davies licked his lips. ‘Yes, of course I’m sure.’ He tapped the photo and handed it back to Norman. ‘I’m certain that’s her, right there.’

‘Well, that’s rather odd,’ said Norman. ‘Maybe your sister has a double. They say everyone has one somewhere.’

Davies frowned. ‘A double? I’m not following you.’

‘Then let me explain,’ said Slater. ‘You see, the real Martha Dennis died years ago. We believe the woman in the photo is using the name Martha Dennis, but her real name is Betty Glover.’

Davies’ mouth flopped open.

Norman smiled at his discomfort. ‘Just to demonstrate we’re not quite as dumb as you think, you should be aware we also know your real name isn’t Adrian Davies, but we’ll come to that later.
