CYRUS

“Cyrus! Dude, get up!”

Caleb kicks the side of my bed and dumps something heavy by my feet.

“We have an eight-a.m. class in the Rec Center.”

I throw my arm over my eyes to shield them from the blinding overhead lights. “What class?” My voice croaks. The aftereffects of last night’s closing ceremony and endless supply of drinks is making my head spin.

“Clothes-Pins and Rock’m Sock’m. For the other athlete’s kids. Remember? You need this.”

I sit up and swing my legs out of bed. A box next to my feet has gi tops and belts in various kid sizes, packages of new red socks, and clothes pins. Caleb is right. I need this. Despite winning a medal this week, my heart aches for the love that I found and lost with Kumi. But kids are everything in this world, and judo can help them be strong and disciplined, both mentally and physically.

I pray that if I never see Kumi again, that I will be able to find love one day. Someone that makes me smile and feel the way Kumi did last week. A love so deep and intense that marriage, kids, and happily ever after is the only choice.

I shower quickly letting the scalding hot water run over my skin. Kumi’s smile and uninhibited style invade my memories. Her silky black hair and smooth creamy skin. Her hot body and dark nipples. But most importantly, her smile. The sparkle behind her eyes.

I punch the wall, turn the water off, lean my forehead against the shower tiles. Today is about the kids. Tomorrow, I fly back to the States. I can do this.

The Rec Center is on the north side of the campus, with café, small movie room, and a large, shared space community room. Flags are hanging around the walls representing every country or province participating in the Summer Games, and gym mats line the floors in front of the bleachers. My teammates and fellow judo competitors are standing around the gym, working a registration desk, and greeting families as they enter. I carry the box of supplies to the center of the mat, with Caleb, where a handful of kids of all nationalities, between the ages of four and ten, are sitting patiently with their legs crossed. Caleb uses a remote control to turn down the American pop music from the loudspeakers and a hush falls over the crowd.

“Hi kids!” I smile at the kids and am greeted with a chorus of hi’s and hello’s. “Thank you for joining us today. Who’s here for a lesson in the history and theory behind martial arts?”

Crickets. No one says anything.

“No one? Oh, Caleb, I think they’re here just for fun. Are you kids here for fun?”

“Yes!” The kids yell out and a few stomp their feet on the mats.

“Alright, let’s do it. Before we play games, we need to put on our special coat of armor. Are you ready? Good, when Caleb blows his whistle, I want everyone to stand up, and line up on that line right there, by height.
