Xavier and I walked out of the library and crossed the square to the seafront. Not only did he insist on accompanying me to see Mr Bennet, but he also insisted on carrying the book himself. I’d lost that argument in approximately five seconds despite pointing out that I’d already touched the book while wearing gloves.

“How do you know the curse isn’t going to harm you?” I held the book out of his reach. “I know you’re a Reaper, but you should think about wearing gloves just in case.”

“I don’t have any, and if Reapers could drop dead from touching a simple cursed object, we wouldn’t be much good at our jobs.”

“The curse isn’t a simple one, though,” I argued. “Yes, I know you’re undead, but really…”

Xavier’s hand skimmed my shoulder as he reached for my arm, his fingers snagging the edge of the book. He was much taller than I was, so it was a losing battle on my part.

“You remember when I walked into the ocean and survived, don’t you?” His breath tickled my neck, as cold as the breeze. “I won’t let you be the one to take the risk.”

I relented and dropped the book into his waiting hand. “Fine.”

And that was that. We walked the rest of the way to the seafront and entered the curse-breaker’s small shop, while Mr Bennet gave us another scowl from behind the counter.

“What is it this time?” he asked.

“I believe this book has a deadly curse on it.” I indicated the book, which Xavier held up so that Mr Bennet could see the cover. “Xavier is carrying it because he’s immune, but we think this is the source of a curse which has killed two people so far.”

Mr Bennet looked stonily at me. “Get out.”

“What?” I didn’t move, but my shoulders tensed when he rose to his feet. “You don’t have to touch it with your bare hands.”

“I refuse to let you bring anything that’s potentially deadly into my shop.”

“You’re a curse-breaker,” I pointed out. “That’s what you do, isn’t it?”

“Foolish girl,” he said. “I wouldn’t be able to break a curse if I dropped dead the instant I touched it, would I?”

“I’m sure you can break the curse without touching the book,” I said. “Can’t you?”

“You can never be careful enough when it comes to experimental curses.”

“So you admit the curse was definitely an experimental creation.” He’d stubbornly refused to give us any useful information before, but two more people were dead, so it grated on my nerves to see him still digging his heels in. “Created by whom?”

The professor came to mind, but it left the question of why he would put a curse on someone. His interest in magical theory didn’t necessarily translate to him wanting to use it in practise, and besides, if the book had been in his hands at the time, how had the first victim met his end?

“How did your family manage to get a curse put on one of their books, anyway?” Mr Bennet asked.
