Chapter 15

Wow. This was not the evening I’d been looking forward to. Instead of snuggling up on the sofa, watching a movie with my boyfriend, I was doing laundry. I’d been putting it off, and it really needed to be done. But, still. No fun.

I dragged my very stuffed hamper through the door of my basement apartment, across the hall, and into my parents’ laundry room. Oh, no. My brother was already in there. And it looked like he was actually working on his own wash.

“Danny, what are you doing?” I teased. “You can’t expect me to believe you care about clean clothing.”

He chuckled. “We mud trolls have to scrub down our tunics every year or two or flowers start to sprout out of our backs.” He finished pulling the rest of his load out of the washer and shoved it into the drier. Then he paused, glancing around. “There’s something else I’m supposed to put in, I think.”

“A drier sheet?” I asked.

He snapped his fingers. “That’s it.” But he didn’t make a move to pull one out of the cupboard above the machines. “You wouldn’t happen to know . . .”

“They’re right here.” Abandoning my hamper in the doorway, I pulled out a drier sheet, tossed it in the drier, and started it tumbling. “Now I’m a little worried. You did remember to put detergent in the washer, didn’t you?”

He slapped his hand against his chest and dropped his mouth open in a dramatic gasp. “Scarlett, your lack of confidence is a dagger to my heart. But, true confession time, Mom actually put the clothes in the washer. She just asked me to come down and move them to the drier.”

“Is there another load that needs to go in?” I asked. “I was going to wash a batch.”

“Beats me.” He opened the second cupboard above the machines. It was completely empty. There weren’t even any shelves. This was the landing spot for the clothes and linens after they were dropped down the laundry chute on the main level. “Looks like that’s it. The washer’s all yours.”

“Great. Thanks.” My CNA classes started fairly early tomorrow morning, so I couldn’t stay up too late. There was a good chance I wouldn’t get all my drying and folding done tonight, but I should be able to get everything washed at least. “Hey, Danny, I just remembered. I wanted to ask you about that treasure chest Dad gave you.”

“Oh, yeah. The treasure chest of Overlord Finnius the Iron Fisted. Did you ever find it?”

“No. I didn’t. And I looked through every single one of your storage boxes.”

“Are you sure you didn’t miss it? There’s a lot of stuff in there.”

“The chest is this big. Right?” I spread my hands about a foot apart. He nodded. “There’s no way I would have missed that. It’s kind of important. Is there anywhere else it might be?”

“Why do you care?” he asked. “You haven’t developed a sudden interest in Twelve Kingdoms, have you?” His eyes got wide, a broad smile spread across his face, and he rubbed his hands together with excitement.
