* * *

The whole wedding situation was keeping me from investigating our Valentine saboteur, so I left early the next morning— with Blue— to visit some friends and neighbors and scope out the neighborhood where Mrs. Graves lived. I wasn’t worried about the saboteur going after the gazebo again. Volunteers were there all day and since the fire Emmett Spalding was being vigilant at night. That didn’t mean that our culprit wouldn’t try something else though. The acts had been spiteful and vindictiveness didn’t always burn itself out after an act of protest or two.

Mom called at eight and reminded me that I was meeting her and Alex’s parents at noon to assess The Falls as a potential wedding site. This was make-work. There was absolutely no way I was going to be married in the same place where I had tripped on a skateboard and toppled into a fountain. People I knew had seen me! There was even video. Why hadn’t I thought of some other plausible location for the wedding? One indoors with a coffee bar.

The morning was frustrating. My interviews with the neighbors availed me nothing, except a whole lot of congratulations on my engagement and questions about when the wedding would be. Blue likes attention, but by ten I had had it with chit-chat.

I had a mild brainwave and visited Geppetto’s toy store to ask about who had been buying colored chalk, but it turned out that that would be almost everyone because he had run a special on it, a box of five colors and a cupid on the front. Lots of parents liked this option better than Valentine candy, he explained.

Stymied, I stopped by Daddy’s and got an apple fritter and coffee, and Blue and I went to Courthouse Park for a snack. The chief found me there, even though I was hiding behind a dense shrub.

“No progress on the saboteur,” I reported glumly and offered him a bit of fritter. The chief declined, probably because Blue was looking anxious about the diminishing proportions of the pastry. “I don’t know how I am supposed to get anything done with this stupid wedding hanging over my head.”

“You want to marry Alex, don’t you?”

“Yes. But I don’t see why I have to have a dress bigger than a car and serve my guests fruit cake and make them dance polkas.”

The chief grimaced.

“Do you have to serve fruitcake and so on?”

“Rosemary wants fruitcake because that’s what she and Bob had.” I gulped some coffee and gave Blue the rest of the fritter. “Our wedding’s been hijacked. My only hope of survival is for Mom and Rosemary to get into a power struggle and take each other out.”

This made the chief smile a little.

“And there’s nothing you can do? Like maybe talk to your Dad? I suspect he has more influence with your mother than anyone else.”

“Dad’s on my side. He wants Alex sane and work-ready. But he’s up against an unstoppable force this time. And if we dodge by eloping, the force will never forgive us.
