The Journey

Thoughts thumped in my head, a hurricane of different thoughts changing so fast, and all led me to the idea that I had to go on a journey that would lead me to my destiny.

I had dreamt about him, a man whose image I saw clearly. In the beginning, it was like I was seeing him under water, just a vague silhouette. But after appearing in my dreams through hundreds of nights, his image became more lucid and I saw it quite clearly. The face of a young man, nice, attractive. I woke up in the morning and felt an indescribably strong attraction pulling me towards him. I had never met him in reality, I could only see him in my dreams.

I’ve always been different from the others. During our children’s games, I was pretending to be a leader of an Indian tribe, with a bow and arrows in my hand, who led her Indians to discover new lands. I climbed high trees and observed the life of the bugs in the meadow in front of our house while other girls played princesses, dressing up in their mother’s clothes. I didn’t go dancing on Friday night, I went to the field to shoot with my bow. As I grew up, I was too busy reading books, and I didn’t pay attention to Richard, who was following me when I was back in school, nor to Daniel, who left flowers at my door every Sunday afternoon and then hurried away because he was too shy. The other girls commented on how absent-minded I always was, and how I never noticed anything except for the books, I had buried my nose in.

My childhood days passed like a happy laugh that lasted so briefly.

As if yesterday I was a child, and now I was all grown up – a girl in the prime of my youth. Yet I felt some unexplainable absence, like something was missing. And I also had the feeling that my fate would be different from that of other people, that an adventure was waiting for me, an adventure far beyond the horizons reached by everyone else. Looking at the night sky, I saw a bright star that blinked only when I looked at it and no one else noticed that. I wondered if this star sent me the dreams of this mysterious man.

One night, when I saw him again in my sleep, he smiled as if he was calling me with his gaze. He was standing close to me, but when I reached out to touch him, he wasn’t there. He was far away, almost out of touch. I saw a long road lying between us and he was there, at the end of it.

When I woke up from this dream, I understood the message that was sent to me – I had to find this man. He was the missing piece of me.

One morning, I woke up and gathered a bunch of clothes, a bottle of water, a small cooking pot, my grandmother’s big blanket, and a little food.
