Chapter 21
The sound through her open window, although distant, caught her attention immediately. Living in a place where the quiet was disturbed only by birdsong, the wind in the trees, and the occasion chitter of a small creature, one quickly discovered how intrusive were the sounds of outsiders. She looked up from her crossword puzzle and tilted her head to listen more closely.
Yesterdayâs snow flurries had given way to rain during the evening hours, a pleasant little drizzle. Sheâd brought in firewood, checked her food supplies and made a shopping list, and now sat with her mid-morning cup of tea and a crossword. The Peters family, with their two children, aged eight and ten, were expecting her this afternoon for their math lesson. Both kids were bright, personable, and much more interested in helping their dad set rabbit traps than in memorizing multiplication tables. Sheâd found that putting math problems in terms of nature helped hold their interest. Two robin eggs in each of three nests would equal how many baby robins this spring. That sort of thing.
The mechanical sound caught her attention again.
Not a delivery truck. She knew their sounds, plus she was not expecting anything. This was a passenger car of some kind, if she had to guess. Automatically, she tensed.
She could pretend to not be home. But her vehicle was out front, and the telltale smoke rising from the woodstove chimney would give her away. Plus, she would have to rush about and close the curtains or she would be spotted. She set aside her crossword and stood. The vehicle was definitely coming up the narrow road leading to her place.
She pulled on a lightweight fleece jacket and walked out the front door. From the porch she caught a glimpse of blue metal through the trees. She stepped down to the yard, picking up the ax sheâd left at the chopping block.
