CHAPTER 29

Ten years ago

Damien had the tiniest room in Lucy and Ted’s small council house. It was a box room, overlooking the road outside. It had a small single bed, a desk and chair. He didn’t have a wardrobe. When he came from the children’s home, he carried a suitcase. He still lived out of a suitcase, the same battered old brown leather case that had followed him around his journey of misery, from one abusive foster-parent to another.

Damien put his school bag down and took out his phone. He had a cheap Chinese phone, with a screen the size of two postage stamps. Lucy and Ted didn’t know he had a phone. He had bought it with cash from a small shop in town, along with a ten pound pay as you go card. He had saved up money from the little he got from his step-parents, and stolen food from the canteen to feed himself during lunchtime.

He was thrilled to see a message from Angie. “How are you? What happened?”

He wrote back to her quickly. “I’m fine. Can I call you later this evening? After 9?”

She didn’t reply back immediately, and he put the phone in his pocket. He got changed into jeans and T-shirt. Then he packed his suitcase, but not with everything, in case Lucy came into his room and checked. The only valuables he had were his phone and books, and the little spare cash he had, less than five pounds currently.

He crept out of his room. The TV was on downstairs. Lucy was speaking, but he couldn’t hear any other voice. Damien stole across the hallway, avoiding the floorboards that creaked, and turned the handle of Lucy’s bedroom door. It was open. He went inside and shut the door. The curtains were open in the double bedroom. Two wardrobes stood opposite the unmade bed in the middle. Damien tackled the bedside drawers first. He went through them, and found some spare cash. He pocketed that. But he didn’t find what he was looking for.

He went through one of the wardrobes, and only found Ted’s clothes. He shut it, and moved to the other wardrobe when he froze. He heard the floorboards creak, and then a cough, from the landing. The handle of the door started to turn. He had no time to think, he dived under the bed and hid. He saw Lucy’s large ankles plod inside the room. His heart sank when she sat down on the bed, and lifted herself onto it, making the bed sag to within inches of his face. He rolled to the other side, swallowing the cough that threatened. He lay still, his heart pumping so loud he wondered if she could hear it. Lucy shifted in the bed, and then sighed. Damien heard pages rustling and he cursed his luck. Lucy was reading. He had no option but to lie still.

The time passed slowly. He didn’t know how long it took, but the sound of soft snoring alerted him.
