Chapter Twelve

“Are you really for real?” Avery asked, eyes wide.

“Yes,” Joss said for the third time. She’d told Avery about the job offer at the diner, and for some reason, Avery was incredulous.

“Do you think I’d be good at it?”

Joss had never been a good liar. “I don’t know. It’s not easy. It’s fast-paced, and people can be really hard to deal with sometimes. You have to be nice all the time, no matter what.”

“I can do that.” Avery nodded. “I know it’s not supposed to be about the money, but it seems like you do okay there, right?”

“I do, but I’ve worked there for a very long time. Everyone knows me. I made a promise to myself many years ago that if I met a new customer, I’d make friends with them. I wanted them to want to come back to see me.”

“Did it work?” Avery asked.

“Still does. I don’t like to toot my own horn or anything, but it’s true. I have people request to sit in my section all the time. That’s why I do well. I really try hard.”

“I want to have that, too. I’m really excited, Joss. Thank you.”

Joss wasn’t so sure about how things would play out, but she was excited to tell her sister the news. She was happy that Avery was excited and hoped that it meant good things for both of them.

“It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed a job. I’m not trying to be like you or follow in your footsteps or anything. I hope you know that.” Avery worried.

“It’s important to enjoy what you do. I’d be lying if I said I liked it a hundred percent of the time, but for the most part, I’m happy. I think it’s fun and rewarding, which might sound silly.” Joss blushed.

“It’s not silly. I made a ton of money in marketing. I was darn good at it, and I hated every last second of it. When I saw how happy you were here, I was flooded with emotion. I left Lemon Bay for bigger and better things, and they were bigger, but definitely not better. I’m really happy to be back. Thank you again, I owe you.”

“You don’t owe me anything. Don’t go into it thinking like that. I provided you an opportunity, but you’re the one deciding to take it. Make it worth it, and you’ll only have yourself to thank.”

“Aren’t you philosophical today…” Avery teased, stifling her laughter.

“Is it weird that I missed you?” Joss asked.

“Kinda,” Avery admitted. “I haven’t given you much reason to.”

That was true. Avery was hard to love and knew it. Joss, though, had to admit that she never really tried very hard.

“You’re my sister. You lost someone you loved, and it made me realize how quick something like that can happen. I don’t want us to lose touch again.”

“Now you’re emotional.” Avery smirked. “Listen, when Dash was killed, it nearly killed me. If you weren’t there in the way you were, embracing me back
