Chapter 20
I had an hour of light left when I grabbed my coat and scarf. I left Kingston napping on his perch and headed toward the beach. Normally, I would cross the street and walk past the police station, possibly even stopping in to say hello, but today I walked with long, fast strides along the opposite side of the street. I'd pulled my hood over my head to cover my easy to spot curls. The last thing I wanted was Briggs to see me heading toward the marina. I had to steer clear of any police activity and keep my own investigation secret.
It seemed there would be no heavy, dreary fog to cloud the beach this evening. That worked both for and against me. I would be easily seen, but it would also give me a clearer view of the marina.
Gracie was unlocking her bicycle from the bike rack below the pier.
I headed toward her. "Closing down for the day?" I asked.
"Yes, I ran out of buns and not many people are interested in bun-less hot dogs. Business picked up again because the man with the stinky cigars never showed."
"That's good to hear. Maybe he's given up since the fish weren't biting."
"I sure hope so." Gracie frowned. "How is poor Dash? Do you think he's the killer? I can't imagine it."
"I haven't spoken to him, but I agree, he couldn't be the killer." I was anxious to break free from the topic. "I closed down early too because I needed a walk. I better get going before it gets dark. See you later, Gracie."
"Yep, I'll be thrilled to get home before dark for a change. Have a good walk."
Once I reached the marina, I relaxed and pulled my hood back. It was much easier to get lost and move unnoticed among the moored boats. One strand of yellow caution tape dangled from a cleat on the dock near Theo's boat, Windsong. The strand of yellow plastic waved in the wind, beckoning me to come closer. On the walk over, I'd debated whether or not to board the Windsong and have a proper search around. It was a daring and possibly crazy plot, but once I arrived at the boat, I knew I had to have a look around. I wasn't going to be able to help Dash if I didn't even have the guts to climb onto the boat for a search of the crime scene.
The weather was in my favor. There was only a slight breeze so the water around the marina was calm. Gentle, flat waves rolled in toward the dock, most hardly strong enough to move the boats.
I stood next to Theodore's sleek, shiny Windsong. It looked almost sad and lonely as if it knew its captain was gone. A few men were having a chat on the fishing boat several slips down, and there were the usual feathery characters, two seagulls and a few pigeons. Otherwise, the marina was quiet, which made sense with the sun setting and the gloom of winter still hovering over the beach.
