Chapter Twenty-Five

Lizzy Clark parked her F-250 pickup truck in front of the Halverson house and climbed out of the truck. She walked around the truck and spotted Mrs. Halverson stepping out of the barn. Mrs. Halverson watched her approach. She spotted the pistol clipped to Lizzy’s belt.

“I told your brother, I have no idea what he was talking about.”

Lizzy stepped up almost nose to nose with Mrs. Halverson. “You are costing my family a lot of money, and you stand to make a lot of money yourselves. So, what the hell are you waiting for? Sign the damn papers.”

“I told you. I don’t know what papers you’re talking about. My husband is in the hospital. Why can’t you leave me alone?” She turned and walked into the barn.

Lizzy Clark followed her, grabbed her by the arm and swung her around. She slapped Mrs. Halverson across the face and grabbed her by the collar.

“You listen to me, you old bitch. I’m not as easygoing as my brother. I will not treat you with respect and dignity. You’ve got twenty-four hours to get those papers signed. If they’re not signed when I return, I’m gonna gut you like a fish.”

Lizzy shoved Mrs. Halverson, who fell to the ground. Through her tears, she said, “Just leave me alone. I don’t know what papers you want signed, so I can’t help you. Now get off my property before I call the sheriff.”

Lizzy walked over, kneeled next to Mrs. Halverson, pulled her pistol and stuck it under Mrs. Halverson’s chin. Mrs. Halverson’s eyes got as big as saucers. Lizzy pulled the hammer back.

“Don’t think for one minute I won’t kill you, and the sheriff won’t do a damn thing if I do. We run this county, not the sheriff. You get those papers signed, or you’ll regret it.”

A voice came from the barn door. “Mom. What’s going on?” June ran to her mother’s side and shoved Lizzy Clark out of the way. “Are you okay?” she asked her mom. She glared at Lizzy Clark. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

Lizzy pointed her pistol at June. “You ever talk to me like that again, and I’ll kill you.”

Lizzy stood up, holstered her pistol and wiped the dust off her jeans. “If your mother doesn’t have those papers signed when I get back, I’ll kill your whole family.”

Lizzy Clark walked out of the barn and climbed into her truck. She threw up a cloud of dust and gravel and tore down the driveway.

June helped her mom stand up and dusted her off. “You sure you’re okay?”

“I’m fine,” said Mrs. Halverson, and she started to walk away.

June stood there staring at her. “Mom, Lizzy Clark just assaulted you and threatened you. We need to call the sheriff.”

June pulled out her phone, but Mrs. Halverson turned and walked back to her before she could dial and slapped the phone out of her daughter’s hand.

“You call the sheriff, and there is no telling what that crazy woman will do.
