Chapter Thirty-Five

Buck had just climbed out of the shower and was getting ready to crawl into bed when the phone rang. He looked at his watch. He knew calls at this time of night—or morning, as the case may be—were never good.

He answered, listened to the caller and got dressed. Then he headed downstairs to the lobby. Standing in the lobby were FBI Deputy Director Felix Marshall and four FBI special agents. Buck walked up to the group.

Deputy Director Marshall did not look happy. “Outside.” He turned and walked away, followed by his clones. Buck put on his jacket and stepped through the door into the parking lot. Before he went through the door, he pulled out his phone, dialed Director Jackson and clipped the phone back on his belt.

Buck walked up to Deputy Director Marshall. “What’s so important, it couldn’t wait till morning?” asked Buck.

Deputy Director Marshall’s face turned bright red like he was about to boil over. “You are fucking lucky I don’t have you arrested right now for interfering with an FBI investigation. Are you bound and determined to destroy this investigation and make me look bad?”

“Make you look bad? Don’t you mean make the FBI or the investigation look bad?”

“You think you’re one smart-ass fuck, Taylor? Well, I have had my fill with you. First you run off the crime scene techs I sent to the mosque, then you give a heads-up to the very militia people we are investigating, and then you send Agent Baxter to interview a man we have already spoken with, who, in case you forgot, is a victim of this crime. What do you have to say for yourself, Taylor?”

Buck had made patience into an art form. There had been a story circulating the CBI offices for years about Buck getting a murderer to confess just by sitting at the table opposite him and not saying a word for four or five hours. Of course, the time got longer or shorter depending on who told the story, but it was always told as a sign of respect.

Buck let the moment of anger pass. “First of all, those clowns you sent to the mosque were walking all over a crime scene that my people were already working. Secondly, my meeting with Carl Miller this afternoon had nothing to do with you. For some reason, you are focused on forcing this crime onto the militias. I needed answers, so instead of just making shit up, I investigated, something you have forgotten how to do. Third, Agent Baxter is following up on a lead. You do remember what a lead is? Those pesky things that get in the way of supposition. Now, if you have a problem with any of that, I really don’t care. We are interested in facts, not opinion, and we will continue to investigate these crimes as we investigate every crime.”

Despite the cold temperature, sweat beads formed on Deputy Director Marshall’s forehead, and steam was coming out from under his collar.
