Chapter 20

Gregorio Petrov had had a very uncomfortable night. Even with the pain relievers the emergency room doctor had prescribed, every time he moved even slightly his shoulder would throb with pain.

“So, do you think you might be able to climb the tree today?” Sergi Petrov asked his brother. “I have found a source for the shoe spikes.”

Gregorio started to laugh, but that made his shoulder hurt even more.

“No,” he calmly said to his brother. “Not today, and most likely not tomorrow or the next day. So don’t ask.”

“I just hate the thought of those young eagles sitting in that nest when we could have them in Russia tomorrow. If we could do that, we would have eighty thousand dollars.”

“I can do the math,” Gregorio groaned. “But my right arm is useless. There is no way I can climb that tree. I’m not sure I could climb it with two good arms. And after those falcons attacked, I believe the adult eagles would be a much bigger issue. We should forget about them.”

His brother wasn’t listening.

“They are just sitting there,” Sergi said. “I am going to drive up to the nest and see if I can figure out another way to get them.”

“Go,” Gregorio said. He needed the rest, and with his brother gone, chasing wild dreams, he could get some.

On his way out of town, Sergi pulled into a Jack in the Box to pick up a couple breakfast sandwiches and a cup of coffee for the road. As he went through the drive-through and passed by the main dining area, Emery Hart, who was sitting with a couple of buddies scarfing down Jack’s meat lovers breakfast burritos, just happened to look out and see Petrov in the red Jeep Cherokee.

“Hey, hey, you guys!” Hart said excitedly. “That’s one of the Russian dudes I was telling you about that came into the store to buy climbing gear to steal those hawks.”

“No way, dude,” one of the other young men said.

“Yes, way,” Hart said. “C’mon, let’s follow him. I’m going to call Luke and tell him where he goes.”

The boys grabbed their burritos and headed for Hart’s Chevy Blazer. He shoved his keys into the hands of one of the other boys and said, “Here, Cam. You drive. I want to be able to talk on the phone. Follow that red Jeep.”

As they drove, Hart googled the number for the Department of Fish & Wildlife and called it. But every time he called, the line would buzz and buzz with a busy signal. He didn’t know that every bigfoot hunter, media outlet, and person with a missing dog out in the county was also trying to call.

“Dang it. They aren’t answering,” Hart said. “I think I have the other officer’s card somewhere in here.”

Hart and the third kid started looking through all the school papers, fast-food wrappers, napkins, and other stuff that was scattered around inside the vehicle.

“Here it is,” the third kid, Aiden, said. “Officer Stan Hargraves.”

He gave Hart the number, and Hart thumbed it into his cell phone.
