You have received a quest. Complete the Trials of the Chichen Itza Pop-Up Dungeon. Would you like to accept? Yes or no?

I accepted, and the giant stone slab covering the temple entrance rolled open with an ominous and super awesome grating noise that echoed through the trees. A red light streamed out of the temple, making everything seem that much more badass.

“Cool, dude,” Gobta smirked at me and nodded, all while sticking his thumbs up in front of him like he was some totally radical guy.

“Let’s see what trial awaits us in the Chichen Itza Temple… of doom!” I jumped up into the air, fist first of course, and then marched through the foliage towards the temple.

Queenie and Gobta followed after me. But as I smiled back at them, I witnessed a shared jumping high-five between them. The two even smiled rather friendly-like to each other, which was some kind of goddamn miracle. I snapped back around, so they didn’t see me see them because this was some rare moment, and I didn’t want to spoil it by making them feel awkward.

I stepped into the sanguine light radiating out of the temple. “Let’s do this.”

We entered into a room dimly lit with scarlet light. The walls, floor, and rising ceiling were constructed of the same weathered beige stone. Jade vines that looked like plump, leafy snakes draped along the walls and dangled down from the ceiling.

A tall altar of stone rested in the center of the chamber with a dusty old tome open on top of it. The red light seemed to actually be pouring out of the book.

“It looks like we should read that.” Gobta pointed as he and Queenie walked through the room alongside me.

“I bet it’s some kind of test or something,” I guessed as we approached. I leaned over to read from the book, but the red light dimmed and then flashed so brightly, I had to shield my eyes.

The light swirled in a tornado of red with its tail coming out of the dusty book crease. It spun for a moment, and then all of a sudden, legs appeared, and the tornado spun upwards until a man floated above the book.

He wore a form-fitting red suit with a white undershirt and blue tie. His hair was light red, parted in the center, and curled up about ear height. His most distinctive feature was his tiny mustache that curled pretty severely.

“Good afternoon. My name is Sazotz, and I will be your first examiner today in the Temple Trials,” the red man announced.

“What’s the first test?” I asked.

“The first test is…” Sazotz paused for dramatic effect. “A test of your knowledge!”

You have received a quest update. Complete The First Trial of the Chichen Itza Pop-Up Dungeon.

“Right on,” I grinned with a thumbs up, channeling my best Wayne’s World impression.

Sazotz spread his arms open, and the red lights flickered and changed to purple. “First, I will explain the rules. I will ask you ten questions. You must get them all right to proceed.
