For us, being rescued out of our orphan pit is both as easy and as hard as remembering the gospel. On one hand, it’s simple just to admit my sin, ask God to forgive me, then enjoy a restored relationship with Him. On the other hand, fighting the lies, swallowing my pride, admitting my need, confessing my sin, abandoning my idols, refusing to be defined by my pain—these can be the hardest things ever!

Most of the time I can’t even tell when I am living like an orphan. I am so blind. A few months ago, David and I were having one of those “discussions” that was not getting resolved. It was making me grumpy, irritable, and angry. My friend Valerie and I exercise together a few times a week, so she had been listening to me process it all for a few days. Finally, one day as I was putting my bike up into the garage and closing the door, she called out to me, “Ruthie, you know you are living like an orphan, right?” So I reached up and pushed the button to close the garage door. As I did, she jumped in the path of the detectors to stop the door from closing and boldly proclaimed, “And I’m not going anywhere until you admit it.”

That, my friends, is good stuff! When we can’t see it ourselves, usually our friends can. God puts them in our lives to help us remember the gospel and drive us back to Him and give us a taste of grace. We need people in our lives who can remind us to turn and trust, to lean in and depend on the One who is inviting us into relationship with Him.
