CHAPTER FIFTEEN

When Daisy took the elevator up to the fourth floor, she found herself in front of two double doors, similar to the room that Broadbent occupied, on the other side of the building. Beyond those doors, she found a two-bedroom suite, with three bathrooms, a giant king bed, and a patio, overlooking the ocean, with steps leading directly to the beach. She spent a good deal of time, just walking around, marveling over the fact that all this was hers. At least, for the next couple of days.

I wish I was more awake, she thought, sinking into the fluffy covers of the king bed. I might think this was all a dream.

As she lay there, looking up at the vast bamboo ceiling overhead, her stomach rumbled. She reached over and grabbed the room service menu and put in a call. She couldn’t figure out what most of the exotic things on the menu were, and she was too tired to ask, so she ordered a big beef burger and an iced tea.

Then she went to bathroom and took a long, relaxing soak under the rain showerhead in the massive walk-in shower, letting the hot spray thoroughly steam up the glass doors. Afterwards, she threw on a t-shirt and some lounge pants. Finger combing her hair, she went outside to the patio and was just taking in the fresh air when there was a knock on her door.

She went over to answer it, stepping aside to let the man wheel the cart in. “Bonswar, Mademoiselle Fortune,” he said with a smile. “Where shall I set up? In the dining area, or on the patio, perhaps?”

She’d stayed in a few hotels but had never had so many options for dining. “Uh—yeah—I guess outside would be fine.”

As he rolled the cart outdoors, she wondered if that was a mistake. She’d probably eat and crash, and if so, she didn’t want to fall asleep outside. But the man was already setting everything out, so she didn’t want to trouble him. After he set the food on the table, he moved two chairs into position and seemed to be setting up another place setting. Did he plan on keeping her company?

“Thank you,” she said when he lifted the cover on her entrée to reveal the biggest burger she’d ever seen. “Looks great.”

He frowned. “That’s strange.”

She tilted her head. It all looked normal to her. “What is?”

“I thought this was the meal for two.”

He was probably used to catering to couples. She shook her head. “Nope, unfortunately, it’s just me. So, you can take the extra place setting away.”

He moved to do so, a look of confusion on his face. “That’s very odd. I’m sure I saw a man at your door, an hour ago. I thought he was your husband.”

Daisy’s heart skipped a beat, but she quickly shrugged it off. “Must’ve been another room. Or someone was lost.”

He frowned. “I also saw him out here, when I went outside.”

“What do you mean? On my balcony?”

“Yes .
