Chapter Thirteen

They returned home the next evening, she and Rand having arrived at a sort of unspoken truce. He didn’t make any overt gestures toward renewing their physical intimacy, but he wasn’t withdrawn, either.

When they arrived back at the vet clinic he said a polite goodbye. Jessie paused for a moment with her hand on the door. He didn’t move toward her, didn’t lean forward in a way that made her think he might try to kiss her goodbye.

She’d never felt more confused in her life about a man than she did at that moment. Confused and bewildered and, all right, a little scared. If she was this out of her depth, what would it be like if they’d been intimate?

She had the next day off because of working through the weekend, and even though she told herself she wasn’t going to wait by the phone, that’s exactly what ended up happening. Only Rand didn’t call.

So when she reported to work the next morning—the injury on the back of her hand looking like nothing more than a scratch—she wasn’t sure what to expect. It certainly wasn’t the pleasant man who greeted her and asked if she’d had a nice day off, and then acted as if nothing had ever happened between them. Rand’s behavior left her even more confused.

It was one of those days where the stars and the moons not only didn’t align, they were a million, trillion galaxies away from each other. She was so engrossed in injecting a painkiller into the horse that had come in lame that she didn’t hear someone approach. And when she looked up, it was too late.

She almost dropped the syringe. During all their years living in the same town, they’d managed to avoid each other.

Until now.

“What do you want?” she asked, turning her back on him and giving the horse a pat, her heart thumping in her chest.

“Now see here, Jessie. Is that any way to greet your long-lost boyfriend?”

She felt ill. Yet she had nothing to fear from him. He’d tried his best to ruin her once before and had failed. He wouldn’t succeed now.

“I would prefer it if you stayed long-lost,” she said, wiping away a spot of blood on the horse’s neck before turning back to him. She busied herself putting the cap back on the needle.

“You’re just saying that ’cause you’re still sore at me.”

She smirked, pushing the stall door open. “Gee, you think I have a reason to be sore?”

She tried to walk past him, but his hand snaked out to stop her. She stepped back, not even having to think twice as she lifted her leg and kneed him in the groin.

“Oooph,” he groaned, doubling over in pain.

She’d been waiting years to do that.

“I’m not a naive seventeen-year-old anymore, Tommy, and nobody, but nobody, touches me without my invitation anymore.”

Slowly, she walked by. Let him stand there in the middle of the barn aisle and rot.

“I can make trouble for you,” he called.

“Go ahead.”

She could
