As he drove, James exchanged waves and smiles with the women he passed, their faces alight with smiles. But as he left the town and ventured beyond, James felt the familiar sting of the decrease of magic, the world around seeming a little bleaker as he crossed the border that separated Tour County from the lands beyond. The sensation was a subtle one, a mere whisper at the edge of his awareness, but it was enough to remind him of the stark contrast between the two worlds.

He shook off the unease, focusing instead on the beauty that still remained in the springtime scenery that unfolded before him. The rolling hills, covered in lush grass, stretched out under the azure sky, while the occasional grove of trees dotted the landscape like islands amidst a sea of green.

As he drove past the village where he, Corinne, and Lucy had had lunch after a trip to the hardware store together, James found his thoughts drifting to Corinne. It was there that Corinne had told him of her desire to have his child. The memory washed over him, filling him with a warmth that chased away the chill of the magic-less world beyond Tour County.
